*All Angelenos unless they’re unhoused. Then they’re fine to sweep and criminalize, right Hugo? You would think someone who is against wrongful arrests would stop protecting Mitch O’Farrell’s 41.18 criminalization zones.

On March 24 and 25, 2021, Councilmember Mitch O'Farrell ordered the militarized eviction of the community that made Echo Park Lake their home for 18 months.
O'Farrell is gone, but the eviction's violent legacy of criminalization and displacement continues in his former district and beyond.
Today is the 5 year anniversary of the eviction at Echo Park Lake. A lot less has changed that you probably realized. We should all still be horrified.
UNDOCUMENTED OR UNHOUSED No one should be criminalized! THE STATE IS TARGETING PEOPLE FOR THEIR IMMIGRATION STATUS AND HOUSING STATUS.
The struggles of unhoused and undocumented people are more interconnected than you know.
An estimated 10% of unhoused
Angelenos are undocumented.
While ICE kidnaps people off our streets every day, city officials continue to sweep encampments and enforce anti-camping laws.

There is no moral argument for Councilmember Hugo Soto-Martinez to continue defending Mitch O'Farrell's 41.18 zones when Hugo compared 41.18 to racial profiling and stop-and-frisk. All of his supporters should be ashamed.
Hugo agreed he can introduce a motion to repeal Mitch’s 41.18 zones and would be able to use his power as the CM for his district to get the votes to pass it since it only impacts CD13. If you have a different definition of power, more power to you! But I don’t feel I misrepresented a CM’s authority
Merriam-Webster dictionary definition of power - noun pow•er 1 a (1) : ability to act or produce an effect
Hi Kerry, I obviously didn’t write this article. I did further elaborate on this point in my interview and wish more of the context I shared were included in the article. I feel you are misrepresenting my words though. I didn’t say anything about “unilateral means.” That’s not how I define power.
2026 | WGA CONTRACT DEAR MEMBERS, The Writers Guild Health Fund and Pension Plan are fundamental elements of economic security for writers. In this negotiation, writers need significant additional contributions to the Health Fund and Pension Plan to protect their solvency and ensure sustainable benefits for writers going forward. The WA's State of Our Health and Pension Plans bulletin explains the current pressures on our plans, and what we need to do to protect high-quality benefits for members when we go into bargaining with the AMPTP in March. More information on WA contract negotiations, including the prior bulletin on the state of the industry, can be found on wgacontract.org. IN SOLIDARITY, WGA NEGOTIATING COMMITTEE
One of the most frustrating things about entertainment industry union leadership is their refusal to endorse CalCare.
Single-payer health care would remove the AMPTP's greatest piece of leverage over workers in every negotiation.
Everyone in the movement knows we must abolish 41.18, LA's law that criminalizes poor people for existing in public spaces. We don't have the votes to repeal the entire law right now, so we MUST push Hugo, Eunisses, and Ysabel to repeal the 41.18 zones their predecessors created in their districts.
Taps the sign a trillion times.
will be interesting to see how DSA tries to contextualize Nithya, a politician who they twice endorsed and once censured. Even in private, Nithya has always refused to describe herself as a socialist…presumably at least in part a political calculation for a larger electorate. (Obviously pre-Mamdani)
Politics aside, jumping into the race 3 hours before the deadline and blowing up every dynamic in City Hall is an incredible stunt.
I don’t say that to be pessimistic about our future. I just don’t believe that Nithya, Rae, or any other politician will deliver the changes we need. That’s up to us.
Nithya will unquestionably be a more effective mayor than Bass. But I’ve seen enough progressives take power and completely betray their values to know how this ends. Electoralism is a parasite on movements, consumes their energy, and co-opts efforts to create real change. Just look at 2020.
Julia Wick tweet: Before Raman arrived, Councilmember Hugo Soto-Martinez said he would Not reconsider his endorsement of Bass if Raman got in. "Once l've made up my mind, l've made up my mind," Soto-Martinez said.
Called it in February 2024 (even if the run date was 4 years off).
Anyone supporting LA Councilmember @hugoforcd13.bsky.social’s re-election need to sit with his hypocrisy.
Sweeps destroy shelter/IDs, making it easier for ICE to abduct undocumented folks at encampments (already happening) at a time when many people can’t pay rent bc it’s unsafe to go to work.
The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office has filed new corruption charges against embattled City Councilmember Curren Price. District Attorney Nathan Hochman announced the charges Tuesday evening in a press release. According to Hochman, Price is set to appear in court Thursday to face new charges related to accusations that he approved multimillion-dollar government contracts to local agencies which in turn then paid his wife more than $800,000. The agencies, according to the D.A.’s Office, are the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority, or LA Metro, and the Housing Authority of the City of Los Angeles, or HACLA. Price has been councilmember for L.A.’s Ninth District since 2013, and was previou

Anthony Oliveira tweet from September 2020: every single day for four years I have thought about Nazi jurist Carl Schmitt gloating that you can dismantle a democracy right in front of a liberal's face piece by piece and all they'll do is convene breakout sessions and commitee meetings til the boots are in the halls.

But any time you hear Mayor Karen Bass, Governor Gavin Newsom, or their allies speak out against the feds, remember the truth:
They're the ones who rolled out the red carpet, welcoming ICE, Trump, and fascism to Los Angeles.
