4. I used for one theater scene in “Etoile” combined with a Tiffen Black Fog filter. I put the shots from dailies in the last frame. I called the filter a “half black tulle” since it’s lighter than my black tulle filter.
3. It was such an open weave that I found that it hardly softened at all, almost too light… but then I discovered the lovely flares it creates around lights, a soft, organic multi-point effect.
2. But it has a simple crosshatch weave that creates a 4-point star effect so I’ve been looking for material in a honeycomb pattern. I finally found something in the craft section of a Walmart out in the Mojave Desert.
For years I’ve used a black tulle material similar to what is used for a ballerina tutu, glued onto a 4x5 filter frame as a diffusion filter (William Wages, ASC told me about this fabric). It’s lighter than any pantyhose diffusion, maybe similar to a 1/2 Hollywood Black Magic in softening.
