Nothing says “paradise” like cruise-ship diesel exhaust mixed with the roughly 10% of floatplanes still burning leaded gas.

AI and Libraries: Why Librarians May Become Arbiters of Reality | Jane Friedman Librarians are managing AI’s real-world effects, making them publishing’s early warning system on reliability, trust, and the limits of AI literacy.

This piece makes a crucial point: in the AI era, evidence no longer speaks for itself. The provenance is everything. But that cuts against every trend in modern society. We will have to re-empower the institutions we still have to create a shared understanding of truth, like libraries.

A Pillar of the Economics Establishment Admits That It Was Wrong In a new report, the World Bank thinks better of its old free-market absolutism.

"It's actually enraging how the World Bank can suddenly change its mind about industrial policy like "Oops, for the past 45 years we systematically prevented you from using the most obvious tool for sovereign development, keeping you stuck in poverty and dependency, lol".- @jasonhickel.bsky.social

When it comes to spreading disinformation, dark money buys a lot of repetition, because repetition works.

Repetition works.

Repetition works.

Repetition works.

(Did we mention that repetition works?)

Call me crazy but I don't love the new reality of Canada essentially being run by the Conservative Lite™ Party with only the Conservative Normal™ Party to fecklessly scream at them for the next three years! It's not, I think, ideal!

The other day someone gave me a three-foot, bright orange, felling axe.

As I was biking home with the axe in one hand, I noticed drivers were oddly well behaved.

I suspect a large axe provides pedestrians and cyclists much more “visibility” than a bunch of lights and hi-viz clothing.

Students were told for a decade about how incredibly important free speech on campus was. And then it wasn't. What lessons did we teach students over the last year? If you are a student today, do you feel confident that the government, media and university will support your speech rights?

Just today, Netanyahu launches his harshest attack against Lebanon since the offensive began.
His contempt for life and international law is intolerable.
It's time to speak clearly:
- Lebanon must be included in the ceasefire.
- The international community must condemn this new violation of international law.
- The European Union must suspend its
Association Agreement with Israel.
- And there must be no impunity for these criminal acts.

Pour ceux qui suivent ce qui se passe en Ontario, il y a un nouveau modèle de rémunération pour les médecins de famille. L'OMA met de l'avant $438 000 par an de facturation moyenne en travaillant moins de 26 heures par semaine... Dure vie Dr.B dure vie…

Yes. Recipe is simple: Put two steel mountain bike frames in a large pot. Add a large bird cage. Heat and stir gently. Sprinkle with used parts and that’s it.

Oversize items you need to carry across town? A cargo bike is the way to go*.

* And for the record, I do own a pick-up truck. But within the city the cargo bike is as fast and so much more fun.

He wasn't expected to be the next Balzac... He was expected to be able to repeat three pre-written sentences worth of French that he could have practiced ahead of time… Not a hugely challenging bar, was it?

Also, for any francophone who ever heard a French immersion teacher speak, the idea they somehow spoke like Parisians is beyond ridiculous. Most French immersion teachers speak like Anglos who only have a limited mastery of French.

Yeah… the "Parisian French" trope is bullshit. It's like saying one learned "London English" in school so they can't communicate with people in Calgary. Give me a break.

The meme of Principal Skinner: in the top panel he looks down with hand on chin considering an idea: “Have the bloated admin salaries and the expensive consultants been the problem the whole time?”
Bottom image: he looks up and beyond the frame with more confidence: “No…no, it must be the humanities programs.”

In the picture that illustrates the post you can see a bunch of nylon cogs inside that motor. Nylon is cheap and silent. But also heat sensitive and very soft. Not a good choice. Lots of old 3 speed SA hubs still running after 60 years on the road. Use good steel not nylon FFS …

Why Long Covid awareness matters:

“around 1.2 million additional doctor visits compared to what was expected based on 2010-19.
The increase is across all age groups for respiratory infections, fatigue, psychological symptoms, and cognitive issues.”

Sounds a heck of a lot like my Long Covid.
