Whenever I go church crawling, I obsessively look for graffiti. Recently, in All Saints Church, Claverley, I hit the jackpot when I found this fantastic little guy โจ๏ธ

The 'Bayeux Tapestry of England'.
All Saints Church, Claverley, houses a remarkable 13th-century wall painting of over 15 metres. Its rare depiction of knights makes it unique in Britain. Thought to show the battle of Vices and Virtues, it is truly remarkable.

At St. Edith's, Eaton under Heywood, there is the most wonderful apotropaic marking I've seen. The "W" or "VV" symbol, linked to the Virgin Mary, was believed to invoke her protection. Post-Reformation, it remained a powerful apotropaic sign.

The ancient yew tree in All Saints' churchyard, Claverley, is remarkable and estimated to be around 2,500 years old. I cannot help but wonder what this historic tree has borne witness to. The tree's existence could also hint at the area being a potential pre-Christian sacred space.

I had a powerful day at the archives. Handwritten folklore accounts, local tales and an account of a witch trial from 1649. Her crime? Herbalism. I felt such a strong sense of sadness for her. There is such a humanity in social history. I love being a folklorist ๐
