I’m also raising alarm about the increasing uptake of timing children read aloud (‘words per minute’). It’s unnecessary and potentially harmful particularly for slower and struggling readers. And reading aloud is not a race to be speeded up! Fiction reading aloud with ‘drama’ is slower anyway.

I think a massive opportunity for children with additional needs would be to scrap the Friday spelling test. I cannot emphasise the amount of anticipatory anxiety and stress this can cause our children who (in a lot of cases) don’t benefit from it. Often they have memory difficulties. #EdChatIE
