Long story short, birds have been kicking ass all over the place since the Jurassic and it's not looking like they plan to stop any time soon. 10'000 living species is a lot of feathery dinosaurs.

Prehistoric birds: "Yeah we are just going to fill all the spaces larger dinosaurs won't claim."

Cenozoic birds: "Yeah we are just going to fill all the spaces mammals won't claim."

The Earth belongs to the birds.
