(Sorry Tino, I tried, but I really couldn't resist making an effort pun ^^)
We conducted both interviews to understand how the constructs are viewed between cultures, as well as experiments that showed our scale responding to experimental manipulation. Thank you to @tinoendres.bsky.social for his remarkable effort in leading this project and all other incredible coauthors!
The pitfalls of literal translation are well known, but still many scales are only translated by the researchers using them. But with constructs that are, as we can see in our data, so different between cultures, we believe this to be insufficient. Hence, we developed each scale from the bottom up.
Excited to share my first coauthored publication in my new lab out now in Ed Psych Review! In this incredibly cool project, we developed a new mental load and effort scale using both qualitative and quantitative data from multiple countries - MEL-TS

I would be curious if what Yamada (2018) calls overissuing is happening here as well. I have no idea if it is a thing that people actually do, and if so how much
I agree this explains part of the 40% and shouldn‘t be overlooked, but I would personally doubt it accounts for the majority of it
Cool that this is finally out! 40% is scary, talk about research waste…
