all of us are.
Trump is reported close to a "deal" with himself under which US taxpayers would pay him $10 billion.
I served in multiple communist and authoritarian dictatorships, but I never witnessed corruption on this scale or this blatant.
Right.
I would be gunning for something bigger, like Secretary of War.
The misunderstanding of embodiment such that social and cultural groundings are excluded (in addition to the often narrowly invoked views of the physical/affective) remains so problematic and seems to only be getting worse at the uncritical expansion of systems such as LLMs
The Library of Virginia in Richmond seeks a data engineer ($100k-$125k) to transform data practices at a 200-year-old cultural heritage org with an eye towards the future.
Looking for someone to imagine & collaboratively implement tomorrow's data infrastructure.

what next? what, are we gonna provide *roads* for the wealthy too? gonna have health inspectors keep contaminants out of their groceries? are we just gonna have gutters and sewer systems around rich people's homes?
Also see some earlier related work from us presented at IEEE ISTAS last year!

We discuss current gaps in dev (eval) processes of OCR systems with a particular focus on historical Black digital archives. This is the beginning of our work with critically engaging with AI systems (various computer vision models/pipelines) for Black digital archives - www.psu.edu/news/enginee...
Really excited for @digblk.bsky.social LibTech Scholar Fitsum Beyene to have an opportunity to talk about our ongoing work with OCR systems and Black Digital archives at @facct.bsky.social in June! Preprint - arxiv.org/abs/2603.25761
“CRITICAL AI literacy”, he yelled into the void…
Ice agents
1 Just passed through security at La Guardia. ICE entirely doing security! 100% of ID and identity checks done by ICE…Truly icky and dystopian. Some thoughts.
Graphic with logos for No Kings and STand Up for SCience, and an image of a laptop with protest imagery popping out, like a raised fit and American flag. 1st two categories are associated in terms of info/knowledge production. Also considerations of control (e.g., “chatbots” is a dominated, centralized category) and related considerations of problems of a centralized (probabilistic, opaque) system (also TESCREAL associated control)
it's incredible that as long as you do the right amount of bigotry you can just rob the country blind and enough people will not care, even though those same people will be filled with incandescent rage if someone uses food stamps to buy a 12 pack of diet coke
TRUMP: I did a mail in ballot for elections in Florida because I felt I should be here
REPORTER: You were in Palm Beach the last few weekends
TRUMP: Yeah. And I decided that I was going to vote by mail in ballot because I had a lot of different things
Something I didn’t anticipate about living under full Federal fascism is how quickly I would forget things. Things that happened a week ago are quickly memory-holed because we have to endure a daily firehose of bullshit.
Yesterday, I decided to watch/listen to Bruce’s Streets of Minneapolis again.
So prob needed reminder to folks to take of yourselves as you can out there.
Reading a Black Geographies convo and confronted with this reminder from McKittrick. “Part of what I am sharing here is animated by premature death and scholars of color in the academy doing a lot of heavy lifting and wearing out.” Which reminded me of a similar convo Bell Hooks had with Stuart Hall
The most consistently accurate frame to understand the appearance of articles like this is knowing that The Guardian and OpenAI have a partnership.
“AI ethics must move beyond the concepts of race-based representation and bias, and towards those that probe the deeper relations that impact how these systems are designed, developed, and deployed.” Via @timnitgebru.blacksky.app — arxiv.org/abs/2111.03687

normal caveats about wealth measures vs GSP aside, we should not be surprised that the elite impunity political environment has been good economically for the people on top, and that all of this is not solely about getting to say slurs during business hours
After detaining children and parents for weeks, or months, inside Dilley detention center, ICE is dumping them at a shelter in Laredo, TX. They are often thousands of miles away from where they were arrested, with no money to get back home. THREAD (1/)

It's been a journey of nearly 3 years, but I'm very excited to announce the CNTR AISLE Portal! 🚀 cntr-aisle.org It’s a new way to review and evaluate the 1,000+ AI bills introduced in the U.S. over the last three years. Check out the Bill Library and our Profiles#AIPolicy #OpenData
This is fantastic, and it's something that we've been saying for years.
When companies say that are using "AI for climate change", they are referring to much smaller models used for doing things like climate modeling.
Massive generative AI models are NOT USEFUL for mitigating climate change.
