Like you suggest, it would be hard to investigate unilaterally and not have cooperation from whatever country is concerned unless perhaps a case receives significant media attention. Maybe if a foreign offense involved deportation that could be reasonable grounds for revoking.

It is something I've wondered about... ROK has confiscated and cancelled passports in some cases where its nationals have engaged in organized sex tourism and sex trafficking abroad, and you've probably seen that an activist's passport was recently invalidated for trying to enter Gaza.

Picked this up when I was in Canada a few months ago since it was unavailable digitally. Interesting reading for this weekend in light of the current Parliament’s fifth floor-crossing, and the most unexpected one yet.

I read the novel in February after visiting the Matsumoto Seichō Memorial Museum and I watched the film on
@criterionchannl.bsky.social, but it is being screened in cinemas nationwide until the 7th. Outside of Seoul and Busan, however, some theaters only have showings until tomorrow.

Nomura Yoshitarō's 砂の器 (모래그릇/The Castle of Sand) received its first commercial theatrical release in ROK today, 52 years after its 1974 production. It's an adaptation of a Matsumoto Seichō novel. Beautifully shot, and a tragic commentary on leprosy-related discrimination.

The largest category is "Massacres related to the National Guidance League and Preventative Detention," which has 20 perpetrators associated with it, and 5 for whom it is categorized as a secondary offense.

The massacres are divided into Jeju 4.3, Yeosu-Suncheon, the National Guidance League and Preventative Detention, Inmates/Prisoners, Massacres in the course of "Collaborator" Punishment, and Rear Areas.

If we focus on civilian massacres, there are 52 people whose primary act of perpetration relates to this category. They are divided across six sub-categories. If we take the estimate of 300,000 victims, that represents 1 perpetrator for about 5,770 victims, and shows how porous the net still is.

Sounds great! Park Jeong-mi was wonderful to interview back in 2024, and I enjoyed writing a review of her book as well. Margo Okazawa-Rey is great too. Met her about a year ago in Dongducheon when she came to see the former STD Detention Center.

Wrote a reflection on Substack about Jangheung's Borimsa. On the surface it is a beautiful temple; home to several designated treasures. What the casual visitor won't necessarily perceive is its tragic Korean War history w/ civilians caught btw state & guerrilla violence. Link: shorturl.at/brxO8

I don’t get down there too often, but I had some time to kill before taking the ferry to Shimonoseki earlier this month. Will try to go back maybe this Spring to look into some coastal tunnels dug during wartime mobilization.

Wandering alleys in Busan’s Jung-gu, I stumbled upon 정오사 in a Japanese style colonial house. It had a striking painting of Avalokiteshvara. 대승불교회 established a temple here in 1977, but in 1991 ownership of the premises was transferred to the Jogye Order’s 12th Diocese.
