It’s not the point, but the “Third World” doesn’t exist anymore. It requires the “Second World” - the Eastern Bloc countries and their allies.
The term has been nonsensical since the fall of the Soviet Union.
It’s now just a racist pejorative. Was then, too. But at least it had a perverse logic.

Seems extra relevant now:
In the background is the Virginia Memorial at Gettysburg, with the statue of Robert E. Lee atop it. In the foreground is a replica of the 1890s cast iron war department signs that dot the battlefield with the inscription “These men fought to preserve owning humans as property.”
Since it’s the anniversary the surrender of Lee at Appomattox, figured I should share a photo from an art series I show a few years back… #otd

Celebrating Appomattox Court House Day!
How scared was I?
I assiduously made sure that I took these photos when I was unemployed - it was in the week-long gap between when I quit the NPS and when I onboarded at the college.
*shot - damn you autocorrect!
I haven’t shared them widely because of fear - of impact to my reputation? Of burning bridges?
But I’ve realized more and more that history without activism - like faith without works - is dead.

RIP German pastor Dietrich Bonhoeffer, who was hung by the Nazis today.

I mean, I’m one of those who honestly believes that Truman should have faced consequences for the major war crime that was the double bombing of Hiroshima and
Nagasaki…

Over the past few weeks, the UMD Bulldogs, Merrimack Warriors, Wisconsin Badgers, Texas Longhorns, and Santa Clara Broncos, all flew their teams on this particular jet - Eastern Air Express's N808TJ.
Today it flew shackled ICE detainees between Texas, Nebraska, Minnesota, and Louisiana. 🧵
Why was I not informed Richard Ayoade voices a droid in this!?
The poster for Star Wars: Maul Shadow Lord.
Since the world is not - in fact - ending tonight, I’m going to enjoy a Star Wars or two.
I mean, he *did* promise it would end with unconditional surrender, so... promises made, promises kept?
just to be clear, everyone, when 8 pm EDT comes and goes, regardless of what does or does not happen, the president still threatened genocide and war crimes and we should still impeach, arrest, and try him
For the record, I had Taco Bell for lunch today. You may lay your accolades at my feet for manifesting this now.
do not let the abuser take credit for the situation they controlled
Someone thank Merrick Garland for his commitment to "norms" and refusing to do his job and prosecute a rapist who appears in the Epstein files 1M+ times.
I'm so glad that as Trump promises literal genocide, we can take comfort in knowing that Garland stuck to "norms," lest democracy be harmed.
If anything big goes down tonight, assume I’m gone.
Living 5 miles from a primary retaliatory strike target’s hypocenter has its drawbacks, I suppose.
Biggest patches are the ironworks, the block northeast of those has four refineries/petrochem facilities, the block northwest of that has another three or four. The cluster lower left is another Aramco refinery. So this is +8 different major manufacturing facilities on fire by the looks of it.
This is the fundamental stress I’ve felt for years, too - how do you plan for a month or two from now when tomorrow will yield such new horrors?

“Our posturings, our imagined self-importance, the delusion that we have some privileged position in the Universe, are challenged by this point of pale light. Our planet is a lonely speck in the great enveloping cosmic dark.”
