man say what you will about mcgurk but at least he has A brain cell, benny's skull is just completely empty, nothing rattling around in there

anyway while most of the US military wouldn't actually be able to define the phrase "mateship" in a vacuum, we sure implicitly know across the board what it means when it comes to the Aussies

I have no direct knowledge of any possible paternity claim against LAC George but I will say when No. 37 Sqn came back the following year LAC George was not with them, and Sqn personnel were tightlipped on whether LAC George was still assigned to No. 37

but they sure drank us out of beer both years

Sometimes mateship is providing a hangar for helos to go home, sometimes it's tacitly agreeing to contingency host half the US military, sometimes it's advising LAC George he can invite whoever he wants from Fort Rich to the Red Flag icebreaker, but he doesn't have any immunity to paternity claims

(their KAF compound had real live grass in it)

But to me this was a perfect signifier of the US-AUS strategic relationship: AUS needed a quick favor for a thing and since we're mates it was a no brainer......much as our constant ask(s) to the AUS govt on our posture are a no-brainer (we think?)

anyway the ADF needed some clamshells for their heavy mx before going back home for the final time and we were happy to oblige. This is where I had my first introduction to Tim Tams, and my folks got a chance to go blast some AUGs + Hi-Powers at the range (also I got to feel grass in their compound)

I actually can remember popping something in my back (no claim VA) while pushing a fueled Gorgon Stare tail (so way heavy between the gas and the damn pods) into that specific shelter to avoid a sandstorm about a month before that picture was taken, alongside a couple of RAF teammates

I found that picture via google from a contemporary feature (www.news.com.au/world/aussie...) on the topic

that picture was in a shelter on Golf Ramp at KAF, which at the time was home to USAF and RAF MQ-9s (about to relocate to Yankee Ramp across the runway) of which I was the Aircraft Mx Unit OIC

The Aus Chinook presence in Afg was the second (but far from last) time in my career I had the privilege of working with the ADF; short version of a long story is when they ripped out for the last time at the end of the 2013 fighting season they needed hangars to do mx on the birds before going home

Not just an officer but a damn FGO; I was one but only just (exactly 1 year 11 months TIG as an O-4 lol)

Leave it to an officer to make a whole stupid thing out of what countless other marines have just addressed with vanilla substance abuse and other unhealthy coping tendencies

Like bad enough the goon q freedum crowd was literally being like "man you are a political appointee special assistant to a USD have some self respect jesus"

13 hours ago 14 0 2 0

Don't look at his xitter

that said there was an extremely funny period where the antivaxx freedum q goon corner of xitter was getting restless bc DoD hadn't already executed Milley and declared trump god emperor and so they were getting pissy at Tata and stu, and man did stu have a grade A crashout

I have bad news for what office stu is currently working in

He doesn't do bad restaurants in general obviously, but yeah china chilcano is a favorite of mine because "peruvian" is one of those "organically fusion" cuisines, and the menu does the whole range justice

Navy Yard would probably be funnier

Turning Layla loose there (or just in vicinity of Union Station in general) could be extremely funny

Oh and I'd be remiss if I didn't mention Jose Andres's multiple joints around town, all of which are excellent (I'm partial to China Chilcano which has a unique Peruvian-Japanese-Chinese vibe encompassing Peruvian cuisine in all aspects)

Silver Diner is diner food but very elevated; it wouldn't be on my "absolute must try" list but if you happen to be close to one and looking to get a bite you can do a lot worse

Also has a Middle Eastern bent; not every diner has not one but two respectable shakshoukas as a brunch menu item

Andy's Pizza might not be the best pizza you'll have in your life but it's probably gonna at least be the top 5, including anything in NYC or Italy proper, so I have to mention it (any time I'm back for a week I eat there at least once)

I mentioned panda gourmet, both it or szechuan pavilion is extremely good authentic szechuan (they also both have an american-chinese/borderline Cantonese section of the menu so use your judgement on making sure you get a szechuan dish)

as others have said Ethiopian in DC is kinda like peruvian chicken in NoVa, there's standout restaurants for sure but hard to go wrong

Rasika is EXXXXTREMELY good Indian; you've had Indian like everyone else in the US but it's next level, get the palak chaat as an appetizer

Seconded, between both art museums and the courtyard the old patent office building is arguably the single best thing to visit in DC for art stuff

Courtyard should also have the annual winter-spring orchid display going until the end of April
