Another absolute gem from Jesse Welles.
did you see MIT invited him to give a lecture recently? :( what a waste.
Incredibly excited to be joining CASBS as a Fellow next year!
We're doing this event on Friday. I'll be running a litttle panel segment with Sherria, Greg, and Rilla. Can't wait!
good stuff and exciting news!
bonkers! heh okay just saw your message here (simpler anyway!)
absolutely! are you using the app? you can DM me there easily
At IAAPA in Orlando this week. If you are too ping me! ☺️
yup seems so! (feels like that history is tied to the earlier "software studies" stuff where deep dives into a system was seen as important.)
It's been fun to venture into a very different domain and at moments reminds me of the earliest days of game studies. This symposium happens at the end of the big theme park industry convention. A little like when us academics started turning up at GDC back in the day ;)
Interesting reflection and seems deeply tied to discipline/method. Ethnographers are often doing single fieldsite books :)
Excited to be presenting at TEAAS this year (case study of Galaxies Edge): teaacademicsociety.org/our-symposium/
Hi5s to the team who pulled it off. Like so many in that community who learned to craft and make costumes and make experiences together as a result of their time on the Halcyon, they undertook making a movie 🙌 It’s pretty amazing how creatively generative that experience was for so many ❤️
We were treated to a showing of the new doc Halcyon Daze tonight (www.halcyondazefilm.com). Really cool chronicle of the life & impact of the Galactic Starcruiser on the people who got to experience it. It’s hitting the festival circuit soon but you can still snag a digital copy for a bit longer!
More pics throughout the weekend over at my Insta fwiw: www.instagram.com/ybikapix/
Back in Orlando for Halcy-Con. Have I mentioned how fun fieldwork has been for this project on play in theme parks? 🤩 Assuming my role of intergalactic ethnographer means I’ll be dressing up again.❤️ the fantastic toy thermal print camera I’ve added to my gear (with some Aurebesh customization 😉)
Workshop for streamers & content creators on media manipulation. Might be of interest to some. (I'm not affiliated, just sharing): www.poynter.org/mediawise/pr...
means a lot to hear old work can still contribute ❤️ i need to grab that book too. big congrats on it! (i’m mostly in the land of theme park studies these days but always love your and jaakko’s work!)
belated thanks for the shoutout! ❤️
Looking forward to speaking at this upcoming event in DC on trust & safety in online games. www.eventbrite.com/e/mainstream...
aw thanks Scott!
aw that is so nice to hear! i felt the same about it! okay maybe can rally and make it happen again this year 🤞 (back at MIT or should we try to get it somewhere else? UK? ;)
ah good to know. i think i went to a PCA in the 90s as a grad student but never since!
neat! thanks for the heads-up about it :)
