The celebrity quote campaign that Reset exposed last month continues to run unhinged on Facebook with a slight change of tactics. The ads now literally put words in famous people's mouths by promoting footage of actual interviews w/ fake audio dubbed on top via text-to-speech apps.
Those tactics appear to be working to outmanoeuvre Meta’s detection capabilities: some ads reached tens and even hundreds of thousands of users before being removed. 30% of the identified advertisers (172 pages) have not been deplatformed and their ads continue to run without removal to this day
In comparison to other campaigns where individual advertisers launch multiple ads, each quote card meme was launched by a SINGLE page, after which the page stopped advertising altogether. This could be a complementary tactic to reduce the traceability of the assets involved in the campaign.
To mislead the platform’s automated systems for content moderation, the quotes were placed directly on the visuals and the ads featured no copy or external links.
Some used outright keyword obfuscation tactics: one ad replaced the word “Zelensky” with “Ze-nsky” to avoid automated keyword detection.
The ads exploit loopholes in Meta’s ad verification and content moderation systems. We noticed a change of tactics used by the advertisers to make the campaign less detectable by Meta’s algorithms.
While we have not been able to attribute the campaign to a specific actor, similar massive networks of advertisers have run political advertising connected with Doppelganger/RRN operation before. The total scope of the two discovered networks includes +70,000 pages.
Reset identified 552 ads targeting 7.6 million users in Germany and France between 6-17 November. Anonymous pages belonging to two massive automatically created networks have been involved in the promotion of these ads.
This overtly political campaign crafts absurd quote cards putting all sorts of crazy statements in the mouths of big-shot US celebs, incl. Shakira, Lady Gaga, Selena Gomez, Oprah Winfrey, Jennifer Lopez and + 20 more.
No more red-carpet treatment for Ukrainians! Apparently Hollywood hates them now, according to a naively conceptualised but heavily sponsored Facebook campaign.
