Starting with basic commands because she doesn’t seem to know any, but would definitely like to give her a job. A previous dog, Alice, completely transformed the second I (inadvertently) signaled to her that her job was to look after my daughter. She took this very seriously and was the best dog.
It’s true 😂
We love her ears 😊
They seem good so far! Franklin had a GSD friend 16 years ago at his foster. Maybe she will remind him of his youth.
Franklin seems unsure but he enjoys walking under her. Poppy mostly ignores him after she says hello, but she enjoys giving him kisses, which Franklin tolerates.
🥰
A happy girl dog taking a sit break on a walk.
We met Poppy when we stumbled upon an adoption event in January, and fell in love but weren’t sure it was the right time to adopt. Last week we decided to go for it. She has been in a lovely foster home in the meantime.

A large and small dog sitting near each other but the small dog is looking away from the camera.
A large and small dog sitting together but the large dog is looking up and the small dog seems fixated on the ground.
A large dog on the ground and a small dog in the process of sitting but the large dog is a split second away from moving to get closer to her new human friend.
Poppy and Franklin are so far not amazing at taking photos together but seem to at least tolerate each other.

A large German Shepherd dog who seems happy to be in her new home.
We have (very) big news!
Say hello to Poppy 😊
Poppy is a sweet 8-year-old girl who enjoys being within an inch of at least one human at all times and dislikes closed doors. She has been with us since Friday and seems to be settling in well.
Oh no
Small senior pup on a couch looking sort of in the direction of the door.
Not sure what Franklin is looking at.
🥰
Photo I took of these wonderful people (the faces of whom I’ve blacked out) singing happy Birthday to their lovely old dog at a bar I was at tonight in Portland
I was at a dog-friendly bar in NW Portland tonight and a table behind me started singing Happy Birthday and then I realized it wasn’t for a person but a really old dog who was wearing a crown and he was old and fucking adorable and I love this city
These days we usually know where he is and he doesn’t move much, but when he was younger he had this incredible superpower for knowing where I was going to be before I did and being there already, so yes I did have to watch out.
A senior pup sleeping among at least three blankets. One of the blankets is actually my sweatshirt.
He’s basically a workaholic.
❤️
The orange one is the California poppy—the state flower. 😊
They can be a lot of work, but I also live in a place where things grow easily. I did a fair amount of weeding a month ago, and the rain (and work I did in past years) did the rest.
I’ll tell you what I’m blathering about…I’ve got information, man! New shit has come to light!
A chocolate Labrador lies at the threshold of the living room, presenting her belly in a very suggestive manner, aware that all who wish to enter will be powerless to resist her charms. Her tail is a complete blur.
There is a toll to be paid
Thank you. Juniper and Maggie were two of my favorites too 🥰. We’re grieving pretty hard, and cherishing every day with our old man. It was a wonderful almost 10 years with that sweet girl.
A small artichoke.
I have not done anything in the backyard yet this year, and there are gophers moving in right now (a definite reminder that Juniper is no longer out there), but there are still beautiful things happening.
An orange flower.
A group of pink flowers.
A white and purple flower.
Flowers!!!
An old man dog named Franklin who is having trouble keeping his eyes open.
Franklin is ready for the weekend. Looking forward to finally getting that long nap in.

Small gold-and-white dog Dottie poses in profile, in her doggy wheelchair, in front of the magnificent Beaux-Arts bandshell (dedicated in 1900). #SanFrancisco
Back when Dottie was younger she once ran and jumped up on the stage of the Spreckels Temple of Music in Golden Gate Park and strutted around like the diva she is. My friends and I laughed so much!
Now she poses calmly in front of it—but even after retirement, a diva is still a diva. 🤩
Constantly reminded of this Ted Chiang passage on capitalism, technology and progress from the New Yorker whenever I see the tech “elite” snowflaking about criticism.
