Honestly, I've been better at whale hunting. I've finished some awesome projects in the past few years.
Recently my white whale project is my health.. I've been consistently going to the gym 3-4 times a week. My routine is probably bad but it has shown some results.

I avoid funny code names. Just name things plainly. Don't be afraid of adding revision numbers. I'd much rather think about "auth3", "users" and "leaderboard" than "gandolf", "samwise" and "gimli".
For open source projects you of course need to be creative to separate yourself.
