If you already have an understanding on 3d modelling and/or rigging and stuff, it's much easier than you might think. Some people port through unity, but i found it less hassle to just do it all in blender. Load it into VSeeFace or Warudo and you're good to go.
You can use pre-existing bones 100%! You just need to pop it open in blender with the VRM addon and tell it what bone is what and it should work well.
Alternatively, the VRM addon has a basic armature properly set up, and then you just need to make shapekeys, collisions and springbones as needed.
If it's SFW, I can stream the process even? Trying to push myself back into comms after a weird burst of inspiration from a friend of mine.
I've recently gotten into rigging 3D vtube models after i got asked about it.
