And yet, the book is a remarkable attempt to bridge two worlds: the polyethnic US and the multinational Yugoslavia. In my new article, I explore how Adamič’s American experience shaped his views of Yugoslavia—and how he presented the country to an American audience.

Adamič praised the country’s diversity, but he didn’t hold back his criticism of King Alexander. The timing couldn’t have been worse. Just months after the book came out, the king was assassinated. The authorities banned the book. To this day, it has never been translated into Serbo-Croatian.
In 1934, Louis Adamič came back to Yugoslavia after decades in the US. He had left before WWI, built a career as a writer in America, and returned with new eyes. What he wrote became The Native’s Return, a book full of sharp observations about culture, politics, and everyday life in Yugoslavia.

While we can’t currently offer full funding outside the CEEPUS region, there are spots for self-funded participants, and we’re hoping to expand access in the future.
Thanks for bringing this up! The summer school is part of the CEEPUS network, which connects universities in Central and South-Eastern Europe so the funding is available for students studying in those countries.
That said, we absolutely welcome applications from the Global South and beyond.
Join us in Nova Gorica, Slovenia for the international summer school "Crossing Media Boundaries: Gender and Writing Across Artistic Media" — Aug 27–Sept 1, 2025 🎬📖🎨 + funding opportunities for MA and PhD students from CEEPUS countries
