A mix of both I guess. I have the general direction for the story usually in my head before I start writing, and then I ponder over the details as I go

Sacrifices themselves don't happen that often in my stories, so I wouldn't talk about sacrifices specifically here. I was rather talking about planning the general plot in advance before writing it
