How do structures, management practices, and resources vary across public environmental organizations?

Why do these variables differ -- both within and between countries -- and what does this say about potential reform pathways?

After assembling the data, I hope to be able to achieve satisfying answers to questions like:

How do structural, managerial, and resource dynamics impact policy implementation in public environmental organizations?

My project will focus on collecting (some of) these data for the world's 30 most populous countries over a period of 20 years.

Public environmental agencies are critical tools in the fight against climate change and biodiversity loss. Yet we lack the cross-national, longitudinal data on these organizations necessary to understand how we can structure and manage them so as to maximize performance.

I'm happy to share that I've been awarded €35,000 from the Leiden University Fund and Stichting Elise Mathilde Fonds for a project titled "A global analysis of the structure and impact of the environmental state".

This follows a 2024 Public Administration (@journalpa.bsky.social) article in which I unpack what optimal personnel allocation means for a decentralized public agency and study what this looks like in the context of deforestation control in Brazil.

I hope this research can be useful for those seeking to reduce deforestation in Brazil, and more broadly for scholars and practitioners interested in the effective design of public agencies.

The World Happiness Report is out, and Finland is indeed #1, followed by Denmark, Iceland, and Sweden. If you rank countries by positive emotion, though, Senegal is #1 and Finland is #25. Again, this illustrates the difference between measures of life satisfaction and happiness.

It, unfortunately, will also silence international scholars (maybe even US citizens living abroad) who are leading authorities to comment on what Trump is doing to America. These conversations are happening in European academia.
