The four Army officers were on track to become one-star generals, NPR confirms. Defense secretary Pete Hegseth's involvement in the promotion process is highly unusual. n.pr/4td8EvV

Author Steven Vickers wrote on Threads, "To confirm, this '100% AI generated' passage is the opening of Chapter 5 from Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein. I think authors are going to get screwed in these AI witch hunts."
I agree 100% with Steven Vickers that authors will be falsely accused of using AI in the coming years. In particular, authors like myself whose works were stolen to train AI systems are at risk. When we write in our own unique styles, AI trained on us will quite likely flag us as using AI.
I think there’s a few factors, but the biggest is that LLMs/“AI” cannot and will not ever be capable of discerning context, only statistical likelihood of “the next word”. It’s incapable of meaning, it’s regurgitating according to the frequency of jumbled letters in its stolen “training” materials.
This is very "won't someone PLEASE think of the children!" except that this mythical adult reader they're infantilizing as incapable of putting down something she doesn't like is almost always a woman, and this policing is done BY women, and the authors they want to "hold accountable" are women.
One of these days, people will stop effing around with Romancelandia. We know how to organize and we care about people.
@GuntherEagleman on Twitter says, "BREAKING: The "No-Go-Zone" in Minneapolis is getting fully stocked like a pop-up leftist supply depot, free hand warmers, winter gear, coffee, food, milk, you name it. This is PROFESSIONAL-grade logistics. Someone is BANKROLLING this autonomous zone.
Did you miss out on your last opportunity to bankroll the fully stocked pop-up leftist supply depot?? Do you want to send free hand warmers, winter gear, first aid supplies, YOU NAME IT, to the Twin Cities?
This is your moment. Let's ride.

The stories I have heard from friends and neighbors are heartbreaking and also make me proud to live in Chicagoland.

As librarians, we are going to have to decide if we can ethically send people to a website for information when that website should come with a trigger warning for harmful language.
TFW you don't feel like you can professionally or ethically refer people to what should be a non-partisan website for information because of the racist, hateful, and false information placed on the banner of every @usdagov.bsky.social website.
The executive committee of the University Faculty Senate for the SUNY system issued a strong statement this week urging university leaders to reject the Trump compact. It's worth a read.

OMG yes!
PEN reported 6,870 instances of book bans last year alone, meaning 6,870 times a books was removed from shelves or access was restricted. That number is not a typo. The number has tripled since 2021.
Hahaha truth
Trump DOJ is looking at ways to ban trans Americans from owning guns. Since 2018:
•4 trans shooters means 2A is null & void
•4193 NON-trans shooters means 2A needs expansion
Here's a better idea: Solo men commit 94.6% of all mass shootings. Let's ban firearms from solo men & see how it goes.
This is not how any of this works FFS
This is one of the most beautiful things I have witnessed, the craft here is impeccable.
If you’re writing an older character, you are not contractually obligated to make them:
•cranky
•incompetent
•hilariously baffled by technology
If they’re a woman, they don’t HAVE to call everyone “dear.”
If they are sexual, it doesn’t have to be played for laughs.

This reference in the episode made me snort while eating my lunch.
The lists are weighted by pubs, we all understand this, right? The only possible bestsellers, barring random Bigolus Dickolas activity, are the ones that enough copies were printed and people have heard of.
So what they're saying is "we are going to keep drowning you in this shit."

So, in some ways, our question should be: how do we get students to a point where these things are true for them, too?
Nothing to see here, just further destruction of science and research.
