The new thing at the bottom of Gmail cuts off some of the space where you used to be able to read your emails, but at least it also has a lot of completely blank white space

A staggering statement from former Washington Post editor Marty Baron: "This ranks among the darkest days in the history of one of the world's greatest news organizations."

Anyway, I would guess the first writer's name I knew was Dr. Seuss. The second was Thomas Boswell. ✊

Not to pull rank, but it's objectively the case -- it was statistically a fact -- that at least during my childhood no newspaper meant more to its city than The Post did to D.C. It is impossible to think there does not remain long-term value in covering non-national news of interest to its readers.

Worth noting that one reason you’re benefitting so fully from the Star-Tribune’s timely, extensive coverage of unfolding events is that it’s a metro newspaper that hasn’t been systematically starved to further enrich shareholders and executives.

Not on the beat anymore, but there's a real Burkean lament to be written about Notre Dame foregoing a bowl after missing the playoffs. "Notre Dame" is basically a creation of the Rose Bowl, as so much in the imagined community of college football is.
