Another banger from @deathpanel.bsky.social
Why do gender markers of any kind need to be on driver's licenses at all? How do we give power to the state in exchange for a sense of belonging?

I wish I could make my neighbors who think ICE & CBP are necessary but have gone too far listen to this phenomenal conversation. Thankful that @dcmigrantmutualaid.org made clear at No Kings DC that Abolish ICE means Abolish the police. Jailbreak your imagination.

Dear Jonathan, In a podcast episode featured in today's Digest, local organizer and Minneapolis Families for Public Schools member Anne Kosseff-Jones speaks to how some of the most radical work being done in our cities is taking place in and around public school communities. "I have a long-held belief that organizing around public schools or in parent organizations in neighborhood schools is a very fruitful place for community building, because I think it's one of the places where everyone really does come together and share experiences," she says. "Having lived in cities all my life, public neighborhood schools are often where I see the most truly diverse community being built." During a time when there is so much horror unfolding on a local, national, and global scale, I find this to be a crucial reminder - we have to start small, within our own hyper-local communities. Though I don't have kids of my own, I draw immense hope from the public school parents in my life who have and continue to step up in this moment.
If you don’t get the Take Action MN newsletter, this week they quoted @annekosseffjones.bsky.social from the recent @deathpanel.bsky.social episode!
Now unlocked: we speak with Cassius Adair @cassiusa.bsky.social about Kansas’s new law stripping trans people of their driver’s licenses overnight, and the long history of state identification documents being used as tools of administrative violence

Why do RFK Jr, Kid Rock et al keep putting out those embarrassing TikToks designed to proclaim their über-manliness? I'm pretty sure this podcast will unravel Saunagate and other mysteries.

“… that mobilizes pharmaceutical intervention, that mobilizes cultural shame, that mobilizes economic pressure, to produce a standardized body. One that is productive, that is compliant, that is legible; and with the intent to unveil this sort of spectacle that is fascism.”
Da’Shaun L. Harrison: “Body fascism is about the deepening of capitalist discipline through the governance of the body—and, more accurately, through the governance of the flesh, when referring to Black fat folks. It’s a system that mobilizes medical authority …
Really, really good discussion!
Listening to this today and I think it really is a gem of an exploration. Even though I was there I’ll hear something @reallandsend.bsky.social or @annekosseffjones.bsky.social said and I’m nodding, like yeah that’s good stuff, great framing! And then there’s my own voice. Wild.

It was a lovely conversation ❤️

Really enjoyed this. I already knew how thoughtful and deeply informed @jonathanstegall.bsky.social is, but can report back that @reallandsend.bsky.social really does just open her mouth and speak in complete, theoretically sound units of brilliance like this; there's no editing magic at work.
Not only is this 100% unarguably true, trans folks have been telling you this about the NYT for half a decade. There's a record and history of that too! Here's me and @reallandsend.bsky.social talking about it IN MARCH 2023 soundcloud.com/deathpanel/t...
