How John Dowland Built a Music Career on Tearful Melancholy

SO thankful to @hwfmorris.bsky.social for including me in this wonderful discussion about one of my favorite composers who just so happens to be having a rather big birthday 😉 (gift link!) www.nytimes.com/2026/04/21/a...

Garrett’s support, as I think a growing number of us realise, is so generous and energising.

You are too kind! You and Arne did the work and I'm honored to be an activating influence in that

You don't need me to tell you this is flawless

Boas notícias: nova edição crítica da obra do Vicente Lusitano.
Pena não ser portuguesa.
Para quem não o conhece por cá: um dos maiores compositores e teóricos do renascimento. Português, filho de mãe negra.

A while ago, I received word that a mysterious package arrived for me at the office for a campus program I'm loosely affiliated with, now I have it and see that it's a copy of @josephmchardy.bsky.social and Arne Spohr's triumphal scholarly edition of Vicente Lusitano's music! Thanks, Joe!

Continent's End - the ocean swelled for a far storm and beat its boundary These pieces are a sample of the work I did in my undergraduate studies at Rice University and my first year of graduate work at the University of Michigan. Here is track info: Gestures (solo flu

and here is a the raucous second movement!

I did not do a senior thesis, but I did do a killer senior recital culminating in the world premiere of a fabulous little chamber concerto for violin and winds called "Continent's End"

Here's the dreamy first movement:

indeed, what a sustainable and reasonable way to run a profession!

I don't have much concrete evidence of this, so it is totally valid to take this with a grain of salt; but, I suspect having a wide range of adjunct teaching experience (like I do) is received by some search committees as an indicator that the applicant is "damaged goods"

academic search committees don't even agree that working in academia as a non-tenure-track faculty member strengthen your case for tenure-track jobs; at least (anecdotally) in my field, I see ABDs and new PhDs/DMAs get hired over other applicants have years of classroom/professional experience

Laughing at the idea that the "first order of business if Dems win House/Senate" should be to re-introduce the right-wing immigration bill Biden/Harris tried to run on in 2024 to take the immigration issue off the table by making a ton of concessions to the anti-immigration right.
