The remarkable life of Mick McCarthy, the Barnsley bruiser still talking a good game - The Currency It sometimes seems that men have two alternatives when coming into their twilight years – open a coffee truck or start a podcast. The 'Saipan' film gives us Mick McCarthy as a caricature. This isn't the first time this has happened. The real man is much more interesting. Wrote this for The Currency.

Sports journalism in Ireland is unrecognisable from when I started out, but spare me the golden-era nostalgia - The Currency When it comes to Irish sports journalism, it often seems like there’s no escape from what should be seen as a malignant virus. We’re prisoners of the past, always looking in the rear-view mirror. Even...

Wrote for The Currency about how the access of the past often led to compromises and stories quietly ignored.

Time for this accidental sports journalist to fall into another phase of life I had open heart surgery in 2023 and stage four cancer this year. That sharpens the focus and the mind. There are things I want to do, and that means leaving the comfort zone behind.

Katie Taylor should see Nikita Hand is a better role model than Conor McGregor Dustin the Turkey had a better shot at winning the Eurovision than McGregor has of ending up in the Phoenix Park, but his 'manifesto' has been liked by thousands - including Katie Taylor's account

"McGregor posted a video of a speech about what he'd do as President. To summarise, he promised to hold a referendum on every decision made by the government. In the history of dumbass political ideas, this is, without question, the GOAT.''

There's a book about moral panics and the Republican Party - its title escapes me - that goes into how targeting of trans community was started as a deliberate strategy by American right in early '90s

A trans character was introduced to Coronation Street nearly 30 years ago and no-one batted an eyelid

Didn’t know that version, Pete. Love it. It's a song that is used to great effect as a recurring motif in Brian Friel's play 'Faith Healer'.

After leading Laois to a first Leinster title in 57 years, it was hard to track down Mick O'Dwyer for post-match interviews.
Eventually we found him in a cubbyhole under the Hogan Stand, having a cup of tea and a Kit Kat on his own, removed from the bedlam outside. He was unique.
