The health burden and racial-ethnic disparities of air pollution from the major oil and gas lifecycle stages in the United States Largest total population health burden is from O&G end-use, but greatest relative disparities are linked to downstream activities.

Besides the imperative to phase out oil and gas, our work also shows the importance of data integrity and transparency, and regulations on air pollution and environmental justice to protect the public.

Historic redlining and the siting of oil and gas wells in the United States - Journal of Exposure Science & Environmental Epidemiology Journal of Exposure Science & Environmental Epidemiology - Historic redlining and the siting of oil and gas wells in the United States

...Much of this disparity stems from a legacy of #redlining zoning practices that relegated certain populations to live near pollution hotspots. Permitting of oil refineries and petrochemical facilities is another factor.

91,000 Premature Deaths Each Year Linked to US Air Pollution Air pollution from oil and gas production and use in the U.S. has an enormous health toll. A new study tallies the cost.

#4 Black, Asian, Native American, Hispanic groups are consistently the most affected by O&G air pollution and adverse health outcomes. Relative inequities are most extreme from downstream activities, especially for the Black population living in #CancerAlley LA & eastern TX. time.com/7311655/us-o...

#3 The greatest health burden from all O&G stages are found in the most populated states (CA, TX, NY, PA, NJ). End-use activities dominate all incidences, except for cancer risk in specific states with large O&G extraction basins, such as CO, TX, and ND.

#2 Around 1-in-5 preterm births and adult deaths linked to fine particulate pollution, and nearly 90% of new childhood asthma cases tied to nitrogen dioxide pollution, are from the O&G sector.

Air pollution from oil and gas causes 90,000 premature US deaths each year, says new study Study analyzed health impacts of fossil fuels from exploration to end use, and found communities of color bear brunt of harm

Our key findings include:
#1 Annual outdoor air pollution from the oil and gas (O&G) sector leads to 91,000 premature deaths, 10,350 pre-term births, and 216,000 new cases of childhood asthma per year, and 1,610 lifetime cancers across the US.

๐Ÿšจ OUT NOW! Our new @science.org study led by @kohrathefog.bsky.social is the first to comprehensively quantify the health impacts of and inequities in outdoor air pollution exposure across all stages of the US oil and gas lifecycle: extraction โžก๏ธ transport/storage โžก๏ธ refining/processing โžก๏ธ end-use. ๐Ÿงต

Figure from scientific paper, which is a grid of 3x6 maps of the lower 48 states. Each row maps an individual pollutant for the Up/Midstream (L), Downstream (center), and End-Use (R) of oil & gas lifecycle. End-Use impacts are biggest and are concentrated in urban areas, especially ease and west coasts. Up/Midstream impacts are concentrated in oil producing regions in the mid-continent mostly. Downstream impacts are concentrated on the Gulf Coast of TX and LA.

Terrific new paper from @kohrathefog.bsky.social @ploya.bsky.social et al.

Full oil & gas lifecycle air pollution impacts lead to:
-- 90k premature deaths
-- 10k pre-term births
-- 200k+ childhood asthma incidences

๐Ÿ“ข Less than a week left to submit abstracts for #EGU25.

Our session brings together researchers involved in different themes of #airquality, #climate, #health, #EJ and #policy. Inviting you to submit an abstract if your research focuses on a few of these themes and not necessarily all of them.
