These are my tips for rendering in general, also important note that I’ve not necessarily mastered these myself but it’s things I’ve noticed having a big impact on my work or things that have tripped me up before

The exception is if you want to create lost edges; which do a good job at letting you focus on the important parts, because as we know contrast = attention grabbing and thus lower contrast in hue, saturation and/or value, will create the opposite effect!!

I like to checkerboard my compositions, like if there’s something dark then I put something lighter behind it and vice versa. It helps with making the edges clearer and consequently the forms too.

The more contrast the more attention grabbing!! This goes for hue and saturation too

One you’ll likely have heard a lot already, but for good reason is that values are your best friend. If it reads well from far away or when you squint your eyes then you’re doing good.

Also when it comes to figuring out forms, it’s great practice to sort your forms into bigger, simpler shapes first and then break down the details after, that way you can set a good base for yourself going forward and don’t run into problem areas that don’t make sense later on.

Main thing I can say is rmr to have both hard and soft edges, utilise edges to make forms clearer. It’s something I still struggle with, figuring out how to keep enough hard edges that the shapes are clear and un-muddied but enough soft edges to give more nuanced depth and lighting.
