So there would be only two US carriers left that offer international travel (UA-AA merger and Delta)?

Yeah, lack of competition will likely further diminish customer experience.

Get a bag that says Titleist or other golf brand on it, and they roll out the red carpet (metaphorically).

I only have AA experience so far, but effect seemed significant.

I had a sport tube for bulky stuff, and got often charged surprise fees and they broke and lost content on occasions.

Buddy found a golfclub “tube” in bulk collection from neighbor, and tried it: Binary switch in treatment.

I can independently confirm it now too.

One thing I learned with US carriers is that if you use a golf bag for any oversized luggage (skis, other), they treat you very differently, and the usual harsh approach vanishes.

There must be some memo that golfers are royalty and must be kept as customers.

(I do not golf)

For lost or destroyed luggage, my experience is that any airlines I have dealt with considers it “hand of god” and not their problem.

So it is a loss I need to eat up.

They are however eager to charge fantasy fees for any luggage size or other exception.

Chagrin, but seems to be a general trait.

I think the issues were compounded that they flew that route with a 757, a less common and aging aircraft in their fleet.

IIRC, a large number of conference attendees from the US got stranded on that trip.

Those with frequent flier status had a better experience, but still got stuck.

I also got to eat up hotel bill:

Hotel said it is airlines fault, United said, Haha, sucks to be you, and my university could not pay it either.

Yes that sucks.

United wouldn‘t offer anything. So 10X less is still infintely better than 0.

Not that it makes your loss any better.

I have a friend who flies for Lufthansa on the Airbus 330.

He was once stuck for one week in Tehran Iran, because of a Lufthansa strike.

He was not too thrilled about it, but stayed at the German embassy for the week, as that looked like a safe place.

And they had beer.

I had flight cancellations with LH too, they however tried to make accomodations for me, one time even a hotel room, for an economy, in-frequent flyer!

United literally did nothing, and refused to reimburse the non-rendered services.

I remain that this was the worst I have ever experienced.

The utter distain they showed to economy passengers was astounding.

I understand that I’m not on their radar for spending big bucks, so I guess it does not hurt their bottom line if they completely disgruntle the lower income clientele.

I know N=1 is noise, but for me LH>United.

United got me stuck two days at EWR for aircraft issues (4 attempts to conduct flight, all failed).

I had to sleep in airport chapel because they did not provide anything, missed conference and they stubbornly refused to reimburse flight for months.

For many labs this also means firing yourself…

The US soft money academia model requires that you provide grant funding to pay your own salary and „rent“ for lab and office space.
