Thoughts on Conceptual Understanding In a previous post, I talked about different beliefs held by math teachers and others regarding when the standard algorithm for multi-digit addition and subtraction should be taught.

Exactly. Richard Phelps in his comments makes a similar observation. He likens the obsession with "deeper understanding" to a little kid who keeps asking "why" after every answer you give. While the questions have value at first, after a while there is little to no value added.
