Thornberry - did Peter Mandelson fail vetting?
Robbins - well the concept of 'failure' is, in of itself, a nebulous one. I think it was Plutarch who once said..........

In, Twist, Out, as they say in bayonet drill.
Robbins says UKSV does not "fail" candidates and FCDO does not "overrule".
Robbins says UKSV recommended Mandelson clearance be denied. Risks not related to Epstein. Department could manage and clearance granted.
Then discussed "appropriate risk management".
Robbins says no stipulation from No.10 that he should be vetted, and nothing said his appointment was subject to vetting - and FCDO had to insist, prior to Robbins appointment, that vetting took place (following row with Cabinet Office)

Funny to recall that this government, mired in scandal, policy u-turns and infighting, won a huge majority a little less than two years ago. And while the fiscal inheritance was bad, the bar for improvement was also set incredibly low. It was just so hard to see how you could end up here so quickly.
