I assume HotS had bot/practice matches, so at least new/bottom-tier players could still play the game.

(Again not sure about HotS but I think people would be surprised at the % of UT/Quake 3/StarCraft/etc players that *never* engaged in multiplayer!)

My point is only that CCU needs to be much higher than 1000 if you want to have similar-skilled players < ~120ms of each other to find matches within minutes, and more if the game has role/map filters, etc. Also skill skewing: if no constant influx, no one for trickle of new players to match with.

Wat

Do you mean ignoring SBMM, region/latency, or any match preferences like map choice? That math ain’t mathin

BAFTA pulling a trailer for an autobiographical game about surviving sexual assault only hours before it was said to be a part of a showcase is an exceptionally bad look.

Wait, I thought that’s what this site was for? Isn’t that why they’re called skeets?

I was only expecting some balance changes, so def a pleasant surprise! Free Kit Frenzy sounds like it will be a good hang too.

Marathon isn't deathmatch gone wide, it's multiplayer Alien: Isolation and every other player is a xenomorph Marathon may be an a multiplayer extraction shooter but stealth gamers who like Alien: Isolation and Thief will find much to like in its sci-fi swamps.

I’m making the argument now because I truly believe it: every single-player stealth fan owes it to themselves to try Marathon. www.rockpapershotgun.com/marathon-isn...

Gonna drop the gimmick for a second and explain, as a therapist. What you're describing is a phenomenon called Revenge Bedtime Procrastination. It's a subconscious habit that develops in which a person seeks dopamine-releasing behavior at night to exact "revenge" on the day which deprived them

Had a Rook run last night where I killed an entire squad by being a tricksy jerk. Easily one of my most thrilling gaming moments this year. I am so hooked.

I have a young daughter and have watched this movie many, many times. I still like it. I’ve listened to the songs 100s of times by now, and I still think they’re pretty good. Thats saying something. They deserve more awards tbh. It’s so well done.

This was something I was not properly prepared for with Spellbreak tbh, and may have killed my desire to design a multiplayer/service game ever again. Respect to those still doing the work under such conditions.

@notalawyer.bsky.social @michaelhobbes.bsky.social could we have a bonus episode where you just defend/shit on gaming and sports, respectively? I want to hear more from y’all about Elden Ring build specs, and throwing balls real far.

This reminds me of one of my first pitches when taking over as tech lead for WoW housing reboot: there should be some challenge/mastery in the act of building itself, even as simple as a cost of requiring the player to walk up and play a short anim to place something, to encourage intentionality.

We don’t judge creative works entirely by their end result. The means and mechanisms used to create it are important, even crucial part of their appreciation. And constraints breed creativity.

We went a diff direction obviously - seems like it worked out ok, and maybe better for that specific game - but I really think there is something to things like practice, labor, repetition, and ritual that games too often gloss over.
