Looking for advice from PhDs in industry/gov roles: I've been meaning to revive my personal website, which I originally created for academic job market. Do you maintain a personal website? What cool stuff do you have on yours?

You can see my now out-of-date website here: www.hansimunasinghe.me

Once again need to remind everyone that the supposedly crime-infested hellhole of New York is one of the safest cities in the country in no small part because most people in the central area don’t drive. America has a much bigger car problem than a violent crime problem.

Thankfully yours was the first quote tweet I saw and this is something I've been looking for- I like to stay active in the winter and underwear that gets sweaty and then cold is uncomfortable and can be dangerous. Hadn't thought to look into smartwool etc for undies! This article was in fact FOR ME!

I don't recall any previous transformative technologies that had to be sold to the public so hard. No one in 1999 was going, "Guys. Cell phone? It's coming, whether we like it or not. I think it's important, FOR WOMEN ESPECIALLY, to learn about cell phone. So that we're not left behind!!"

For all those still feeling the moon joy—Artemis II was brought to you by public schools and publicly funded science. Copy that! 👩‍🚀🚀💕

*All four astronauts went to public schools!

If you watch a lot of local TV news in the morning like I do, you really see how traffic violence is background noise in our daily lives. Crashes in the traffic report, stories about pedestrians being hit, cars into buildings, road rage. The danger on our roads is a constant feature.

"We must become less reliant on American tools and regain control of our digital destiny. We can no longer accept that our data, our infrastructure, our strategic decisions depend on solutions whose rules, pricing, evolution, and risks we do not control."

Genuine question: Why is the Trump regime so invested in Hungarian election? Of course, crooks like to stick together and get into mutually beneficial schemes, but why the public declarations of support and official visit from Vance?

The Dream Team failed. Total shock. We sent two of our most mediocre real estate developers and a fraud. Who could’ve guessed this outcome?

Young adult happiness is falling. Percent of young people who are pretty or very happy has dropped from 88% to 76% over the last 15 years after having held fairly steady between 1980 and 2010

My hottest “I have no data to back this up” take is that phones aren’t making young people less happy. What’s making them less happy is living in a world where everyone is having their reality defined by recommendation algorithms that can only care about whether something keeps you watching.

No new projects only until he is in power.

Not to minimize the pain, suffering, and death this decision will cause, but envisioning what people will rebuild after this regime is the only thing keeping me going these days.

Also "some men improve the world only by leaving it". Whichever comes first.

Every single one of the astronauts who went to the moon and back on Artemis II was educated at a public school.

Thinking of the teachers who poured into Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, Christina Koch, and Jeremy Hansen tonight. You helped send a kid to the moon!

NASA isn't why the US doesn't have universal healthcare, or a social safety net. The US doesn't have those things because politicians with the power to provide them choose specifically not to (with varying levels of support from voters). Enthusiasm for human spaceflight doesn't drive that choice.

This image of home just came down from the Artemis II crew.

Taken after their translunar injection burn, there are aurorae at top right and lower left, and zodiacal light at lower right.

Pfizer has ended its large Phase III Trial of an updated COVID19 vaccine.

They were not able to enroll enough people to meet their goal.

A major problem is the FDA’s wholly unreasonable demand that people with chronic conditions, who benefit most from the vaccine, not be allowed to participate.

Two brilliant civil rights lawyers - one Asian American; one Black American. Both women. @aclu.org’s Cecellia Wang & @legaldefensefund.bsky.social’s @janainelson.bsky.social. They argued two of the most consequential cases in SCOTUS this year. This embrace is one of my favorite moments of the day.

Her message is good but actions are very suspect. Campaigning for Jill Stein in Michigan was weird and felt opportunistic.
