Ah, what could have been in #FriarTown...
Here's a 1988 #ProvidenceCollege recruitment letter to Shaquille O'Neal when Rick Barnes was coach... It's up for auction at MYNT Auctions in NYC. Estimate: $1,235-$1,605. The authenticated letter has been signed by Shaq. @pcathletics.bsky.social

The newly constructed pavilion at the Providence's pedestrian bridge looks like it's about ready to go... just in time for the warm weather.
True. This shot gives a little sense of the scale when you see the people on the ground
Francis St. closed in downtown Providence as a massive helicopter transports HVAC units over Providence Place mall Sunday afternoon
Good news: Same old sign, new owners. Dari Bee in Riverside Square is back! It’ll reopen in a few months.
I thought it was a goner.
My colleague Chris Allen spotted these guys on Dorrance St. in Providence on Tuesday... My theory: Advance Iraqi security checking the city. The Iraqi soccer team qualified for the World Cup last night and will play at Gillette in June.
Either that, or they've come to check out our bike lanes.
Haven’t felt much like posting with the way things have been going in the world
The East Bay Bike Path’s long-closed bridges over the Barrington and Palmer rivers look like they’ll be ready to open soon… the railings don’t look fishing friendly.

This poster has a place of pride in my living room. One of the few remaining in excellent condition outside of a museum. Such a cool story behind it, how Conner was commissioned, what his intention was and how his plans were rejected by the NY Film Festival organizers.
Pomfret Vt.: "When the ... colors start to pop, the road is suddenly clogged with dozens, sometimes hundreds, of cars, parked haphazardly. Tour buses come, spilling out passengers with cameras ... visitors often walk brazenly onto private property ... setting out picnics on the sprawling fields."
According to Chat GPT (although notoriously inaccurate):
New but unfinished bike path along Kingsley Ave. and the Woonasquatucket River in Providence. Kingsley no longer a two way street.
The Brown & Sharpe strike, which began in 1981. The picket lines stayed up for years, and the strike didn't technically end until the mid to late 1990s. I believe by some measures it's considered the longest strike in U.S. history.
Afternoon thunderstorm rolling through Providence today…
Downed trees along the East Bay Bike Path, including this that requires riders to carry their bikes over the trunk just south of the Squantum Club

Maybe the strangest named place in R.I. that doesn't exist anymore:
Starve Goat Island
In the 20th century, landfill on the Providence River made the island disappear. At one time, that area had the most productive oyster beds in the East.
Save the Bay HQ sits where Starve Goat Island was.
I suspect that's why they put in the floating bus stop islands along some of these lanes.
We've largely failed on the "What Comes Next" part of this article: a concrete maintenance plan. Not one flex-post remains standing on Manton Ave (daunting to ride against traffic in an unprotected bike lane). And it's been that way for a year. Flex-posts along South Water St. are disappearing too.
Providence life hack No. 97:
If you like cherries, now is the time to pick some fresh ones at Davis Park. There are about 5 trees that have beautiful cherries. Just leave some for others.
There’s still a for sale sign in the window. Maybe they haven’t taken it down yet
