Meanwhile, working with kids, I love being called miss, ma'am*, AND sir**, because I always assume they are trying to be respectful.

* I've earned my age!
** makes me feel like a captain in Star Trek

.... I need to hustle but I recommend "The Last Human Job" by Allison Pugh as an exploration of using AI for the poor masses while keeping bespoke human artisans available to those who can afford them. In terms of "caring" professions like teaching, nursing, therapy, etc.

But yeah... education is both something to be weakened and something to be used as some kind of Trojan Horse by people who don't see other people as people.

Also read someone's opinion recently that the 2010s push for teaching coding in schools was largely due to large companies wanting to make entry level hiring cheaper by flooding the market with coders. I am curious about that and looking to learn more.

I am on my lunch break right now but if I remember to, I can mosey on back here later and really unload my feelings. But the short answer is, someone is always looking to make teachers obsolete via some technology or other.

Oh, they're not that explicit. But there's a repeating pattern of edtech tools being free for teachers and schools until they use our experience to perfect the product and justify charging for it.

This is one of the things that burns my biscuits though. As a teacher, I'm told I have to teach students how to use AI, by apparently doing what you described. Except we are never offered any additional compensation.

You know that one Amy Adams movie where the aliens make her experience her life events out of chronological order? No matter what the settings, that's how I experience my email.

I like that you acknowledge that you don't need to get a cat, a cat will eventually happen.

Normal school stress makes my brain go, "Maybe I should get bangs."

April school stress makes my brain go, "Maybe I should shave off my eyebrows."

Child who interrupted the technology lesson 5 thousand times: You know, we didn't really get a lot of time on the computers

I think a lot of young conservatives (particularly social conservatives) don't actually want to win their peers over to their way of thinking so much as bend others to their will.

I feel like a research librarian could help recover some of that info but probably not all of it. They have access to certain databases. But I don't even think I have records at home to account for many of my moves.

I remember childhood addresses better than much more recent ones because of how my parents would drill them into us with every move.

But I forget to add semicolons in Java and I forget to indent in Python so I do not trust myself to keep my Is, Vs, Xs, Ls, and Cs straight.

me: okay brain, let's study

brain: what if instead of Arabic numerals, you had to use Roman numerals for computer coding

me: sometimes you are so good at wondering and so bad at learning

Wait, so the story about Grace Hopper and the bug is not actually true? (Or at least not provable?)

I have ranted about this a million times before.

But when you put a value judgement of "clean" on the content of books then you put the value judgement of "dirty" on the rest.

You are then implying the readers who has had the same life experiences as those in "dirty* books are also "dirty."

Technology is supposed to make a lot of things better, faster, safer, or easier. But if it makes things better, faster, safer, or easier for you while also making material conditions much worse for someone who can't meaningfully choose that, it's not worth it.
