Flock left 60 Condor AI-people tracking cameras open to the internet. @404mediaco reports cameras can zoom in close enough to read your cell phone screen. San Diego has not said it has these cameras, but it shows (again) Flock as sloppy and creepy.

Former ICE and CBP leaders who have now left the agency told the FT that previous safeguards are gone, with ICE pursuing aggressive quotas by using data from Social Security, the IRS, and commercial surveillance and license plate reader companies.

We are inspired, furious, and we will not stop. We showed up in record numbers. 180 in person, more online. Hundreds wrote in too. The overwhelming majority opposed approving SD's ALPR program. Our coalition stood stronger than ever with more than 70 community and labor organizations standing side by side. Even still, we are furious that the City Council majority voted to approve the ALPR use policy and 53 other surveillance technologies, continuing the use of Flock.
We thank CMs Elo-Rivera, Foster, and Moreno for opposing. We saw them dig into the police department's and Flock's policies and practices, validating community concerns and clarifying problems Flock kept dismissing as "hypotheticals." All the calls and conversations before the vote made a difference. We saw some Councilmembers take this more seriously than they had before, with CM Lee saying he wants to have a call for vendors this year. Let's take a breath, reflect, and plan for the fight ahead.
In February, the City's 2026 Annual Surveillance Report process begins. Funding surveillance will come up in the budget process. And we can find ways to resist surveillance all day every day. Let's build the world we want to live in. Sign up here to get direct updates from TRUST Coalition and keep pushing: https://trst.fyi/plugin

What the Flock indeed! Union Tribune drops this gem: An SDPD captain helped secure a multimillion dollar surveillance deal. Now he works for the contractor.

Phrase of the year: "get the flock out of my city!"
For 2 weeks this year, unauthorized outside agencies searched SD's Flock license plate data. Flock messed up the settings. SDPD first hid the breach, then admitted it months later but still redacts the reasons for the 12,914 unauthorized searches.

"Ending the Flock contract is more than a policy choice. It is a declaration that San Diego values privacy, dignity and community trust."
Patricia Mondragon @pmondragon.bsky.social, Alliance San Diego
"End the Flock contract now. We must use the millions of dollars used in the installation and implementation of this dangerous technology to fund proven solutions to public safety like affordable housing access to medical care, food security, child care"
Branden Sigua @sdicaclu.bsky.social
“Stop placing wealth and profit over the privacy of our lives...of friends and our families and our members. End the use of ALPRs, end the relationship with this company, end the relationship w/these oppressive businesses...Get the Flock Out”
Chris Wilson, United Domestic Workers
"Nobody should be OK w/the gestapo police state that is being formed right now in this country. [Flock] is about forming a mass surveillance network so that the hostile federal government can take over everything, and we are paying the price for it"
Brigette Browning @sdiclaborcouncil.bsky.social
"Flock's pattern of behavior and the pattern of abuse of its technology makes it impossible for me to trust them or for me to tell San Diegans they should trust Flock with information about their every move."
Councilmember Sean Elo-Rivera @seanelorivera.bsky.social
"We feel betrayed b/c the police are supposed to provide safety for our community, but by using this tech they are only causing more pain and suffering to our people, not only for the migrant families kidnapped by ICE terrorists, but to the entire community"
Yolanda Menezes, ACCE
Leaders and community spoke truth at our press conference this week.
"The SD police officer that led this initiative, that led bringing this technology to the city of SD, is now an employee of Flock. There is something extremely wrong with how this was done."
Councilmember Henry Foster

Flock turbocharges unjust detentions. Our City should invest in safety through education, public libraries, community centers, hunger relief, affordable housing, parks, community gardens, and so much more.

Flock does not reduce crime, despite the dramatic one-off-story. Flock has failed to provide independent studies that verifies their research on ALPR’s effectiveness. Yet Flock scans everybody. Expected glitches can lead to dangerous false detentions www.youtube.com/watch?v=VlHL...
Police in Texas used Flock ALPR to get search for people seeking abortions in 2025. Flock lied about this to the public for months.

There have been multiple cases where Flock has been used to stalk members of the community, including the ex-girlfriend of a Kansas Police Chief in 2024.

Flock is built on investment by Peter Thiel, a venture capitalist who writes “I no longer believe freedom and democracy are compatible.” Donald Trump and Peter Thiel are using AI to supercharge the AI surveillance state, Reason Magazine writes.

Flock lied about a Texas sheriff who searched Flock to track down a woman for an abortion. Flock asserted the woman was never under criminal investigation. Court documents showed Flock misled the public for months, accusing journalists of lying. #shutdownflock #whattheflock
