I think the new alien Earth franchise is a different telling and an expansion on the universe. Likewise Romulus was a nice break from the Ripley storyline. And showed colony life which we only get glimpses of the the early movies. I treat these two differently. Like solo/rogue one vs star wars..

As far as the alien franchise goes, I think Prometheus really does get an underdeserved appreciation. It's served a specific purpose which was to tie previous storylines into the new storyline. That didn't vibe well with a lot of people because it changed a lot of things.
