On Wednesday, our legal team will be at the Supreme Court defending the American tradition of birthright citizenship against President Trump's attacks.
We're prepared to fight for babies born in the U.S.A. and the families who love them.
James declined to move books the board ordered relocated from the children to the adult section. In a note to the board, she stated that complying would constitute “government-mandated viewpoint discrimination” and “violate the First Amendment right of all citizens of Rutherford County.” (2/2)
The Rutherford County Library System Board will meet today, March 30 at 5p.m. CT, to consider disciplinary action, including termination, of library director Luanne James. (1/2)
Born and raised in Memphis, Maxine Smith played a crucial role in the desegregation of TN schools. She continued her efforts with the NAACP and the Memphis Board of Education, helping lead campaigns that helped elect Black Memphians to prominent positions in the community. #WomensHistoryMonth
His daughter has been living in fear since. She doesn’t want to go outside and is constantly scanning for cars with tinted windows. Another time they went to get ice cream, she begged her father to take her home. One day as they were driving, they witnessed 5-year-old Liam Conejo Ramos getting detained by ICE. She asked her dad, “They can take kids too?” When they returned, she closed the curtains in the house and used her family’s shoes to block the front door. That same day, they saw ICE agents four other times, constantly hearing whistles in the background.
As ICE patrolled Minnesota, one man insisted keeping his family home, even though he's a citizen. That was until his 5-year-old daughter really wanted ice cream, saying “I’m brave. I can go.”
When they returned from the ice cream shop, ICE agents were at his house. Their reign of terror must end.
Black graphic with white text that reads "Birthright citizenship, noun. The principle that every baby born in the United States is a U.S. citizen, regardless of race, color, or ancestry. It is guaranteed by the Constitution’s 14th Amendment. It ensures that: Every child born in the U.S. has the same rights (with the narrow exception of children of foreign born diplomats) Politicians do not get to decide who among those born in our country is worthy of citizenship" ACLU-WA logo at the bottom.
Birthright citizenship has been a fundamental right in our country for over 150 years.
President Trump's efforts to end birthright citizenship are part of a broader effort to redefine who belongs in our country — we refuse to let that happen.
Our country doesn’t need a king, our country needs the freedom to protest, speak out, and live freely. Join us statewide for the 3rd round of the No Kings protest – we can’t wait to see you there.

The Trump Admin. does not have the right to undermine local control. Yesterday, we made that point very clear.
When Pres. Trump came to Memphis to show support for the unconstitutional National Guard deployment and UNSafe Task Force, our communities showed up.

Miriam DeCosta-Willis is a true example of perseverance & success. When rejected from the University of Memphis, she refused to give up & became the first Black faculty member there years later. She resided in Memphis as a scholar, educator, and writer until her passing in 2021. #WomensHistoryMonth
We’re truly lucky to have Tennessee-born women icons like Wilma Rudolph. As a historic Olympian from Clarksville, Wilma showed us what it means to fight through intense obstacles. Her life story serves as a template for many women who want to achieve goals that seem impossible. #WomensHistoryMonth
The new Secretary of Homeland Security faces a critical moment for the Trump administration's cruel mass detention and deportation policies.
As Congress debates funding for the department, these rogue agencies wreak havoc in our neighborhoods. We need real reforms, not just a new manager.
On Monday, we have the chance to make our demands loud and clear: books should not be banned just because officials don’t agree with the content. We’ve won before, and we can win again.

The Trump administration's retaliation against Mahmoud Khalil for his political advocacy sets a dangerous precedent.
If the government can punish some of us for speech it doesn't like, then everyone's rights are in danger.
Aside from being a famous country singer & an East TN native, Dolly Parton has been an advocate for many causes. ✨
From founding the Imagination Library to supporting the LGBTQ+ community, Dolly is a prime example of what it means to shine bright on the stage & in our hearts. #WomensHistoryMonth
The 61st anniversary of Bloody Sunday in Selma was a time to honor & advocate. ACLU-TN board members & staff traveled to Alabama for the commemoration – participating in a march, day of service, sharing information, & more.
