Between regulation, pressure and collaboration: the public–private entanglement in content moderation This paper examines the evolving roles of states in content moderation and their complex relationships with social media platforms over time. As these…

New article with @soweerts.bsky.social! We examine the relationships between states/social media platforms over time and propose a framework to make sense of them - at a time when these relationships are starting to pose serious threats to democratic values and the rule of law.

3b/ It will therefore not be easy to make these standards change to satisfy legal certainty requirements. A failure to make these changes would show a limit of the DSA human rights-inspired approach.

2/ Significant changes would be required to comply with Art. 14. If these changes occur, they could have an impact beyond the EU, as non-EU countries could see changes in social media policies as a result of the DSA requirements.

1/ At present, Facebook's standards do not comply with the requirements of Article 14 DSA. This article is a good illustration of the efforts of the EU to incorporate human rights-inspired processes into content moderation.

Big Tech Ditched Trust and Safety. Now Startups Are Selling It Back As a Service The burgeoning trust and safety industry promises to help tech companies navigate scrutiny and regulation. But these services bring problems of their own.

crucial point from @sayhar.bsky.social - outsourcing moderation to SaaS companies means it's even more siloed from other aspects of platform governance: people dealing with harms to users have zero influence over any other aspect of how platforms are designed & operated www.wired.com/story/trust-...
