It says an enormous amount about the Royal Navy in the late Victorian period that they could essentially build HMS "Fuck That One Ship In Particular" as and when required.

Earth Day 57
Science says act fast on climate
Economics say act fast on climate
Delaying climate action destroys future prosperity for present-day pollution.

Solar, wind, storage, EVs all beating fossil fuels on cost and scale
Now it’s about speed
What we still lack is resolve

Lake Sturgeon spawning

Lake Sturgeon spawning

After disappearing from the Milwaukee River in the early 20th century due to overfishing and habitat loss, the new discovery of an adult sturgeon 20 miles upstream from Lake Michigan is a milestone in a massive restoration project that’s been underway for 20 years www.wuwm.com/lake-sturgeo...

During Prohibition (1920-1933) folks in Southern California had an easy jaunt south of the border to Tijuana to enjoy all of the alcohol their livers could handle. That said, I don’t understand this booze graph at all but everything was 20¢ so bottoms up 🍸 1/2

After living in so. California I have a deep, abiding, RABID HATE for leaf blowers.
On our suburban street NO ONE did their own lawns/yards.
We'd get different gardening guys w/leaf blowers EVERY DAY AT ANY HOUR running those horrible things.
Non-stop noise & blown dirt, NO Code Enforcement rules. 🤬

I disagree with the flak this app gets. Just don't follow people that make you cringe. Mute them. Follow the funny ones. It's like hanging out in the coloring book section of a bookstore and being like wow this place is for idiots

Along these lines, I saw the documentary 'Join Or Die' and am convinced it should be required viewing for EVERYONE. It was sobering & eye-opening.
Bob really knows his shit, and has done the research to back it all up.

And yes, I've joined several groups!

The cyberattack on The British Library in October 2023 knocked out ebooks and almost ever other computer thing there for years.

Ebooks just came back. They were knocked out everywhere using the BL’s license (legal deposit libraries I think? More libraries?)

Distributed physical copies matter.

The Columbine massacre was on this date in 1999. Instead of energizing our country to get gun violence under control, it kicked off a new normal. One of the best explanations ever of journalism's destructive impact on mass shootings came from Roger Ebert in his review of Gus Van Sant’s “Elephant.”
