On Earth Day, a look at how we got the Convenience Industrial Complex Nobody ever lost money making things easier or more convenient, and our planet is paying the price.

Happy Earth Day! I recycle a post about how we got buried in plastic, quoting President Eisenhower: "As we peer into society’s future, we – you and I, and our government – must avoid the impulse to live only for today, plundering for our own ease and convenience the precious resources of tomorrow."

Canada goldenrod seedlings in a pot used for winter sowing.

They look great, congrats! I’ve not yet tried milk jugs. This is my 1st attempt at winter sowing: Canada Goldenrod (Solidago canadensis) in pots covered in leaves & left in a box with a good foot of snow as a blanket. Still cold out in Montreal, but the sun’s been coaxing the seedlings out. Yay!

There are many things I’m very proud of as a Canadian. MANY things. But every time I watch another media story about another ambitious push in renewable energy from China, I’m embarrassed that Canada isn’t aggressively working to quickly become a true global powerhouse in renewable energy.

The Circus Sands | La Strada (1954) Gelsomina exists both outside and inside the story, the glowing heart of La Strada and a part of our viewing experience, marveling at it with us.

“I first watched LA STRADA young enough to cross the literal with the figurative & old enough to call it a fairy tale. I catch the illusion hiding in plain view, and, despite its allegorical metaphysics, see the profoundly basic idea that humans need one another, that we are not meant to be alone.”
