One bad example: I ghosted an online friend I had never met in person when I found out he supported Tr*mp. Less than a year later I was astonished to find myself a few places behind him at a tourist attraction in another country. #awkward

The best way, the only way.

When you decide you need to change your boundaries, be up front about it and just say "I need to pull back." An online friend I cared about a lot just ghosted me rather than have that conversation; it still hurts. Be honest with your friends, even if it's awkward. It's better in the long run.
