"If this is to be a true golden age of science and discovery, NASA can’t rely on serendipity; the agency must make active investments in dedicated science projects that address the highest priority questions facing humanity."

I know there are a lot of bad feelings about FIFA and the World Cup but that shouldn't dampen your enthusiasm for the triumphant return of the VOLCANO WORLD CUP. Stay tuned! (I don't even require massive bribes or a World Peace medal).
The Moon! The Sun's corona! A crewed spacecraft! Oh my!
HOLY SHIT
The foreground is dominated by the dark, heavily cratered lunar surface. In the distance, a crescent Earth, setting. Behind, the black of deep space.
I can't stop staring at these photos.
This is what Earthset looks like—our homeworld setting behind the Moon.
And compare the dark, cratered surface of the Moon to the blue oceans and swirling clouds on our own planet.
If there's a starker illustration of our lifegiving world, I've yet to see it.
❤️
Needs to be said again. Ahhh!! We're all in this photo (all of humanity.... eeevvvveeerrryyyyooonnneeee....)
None of Orientale's rings are the initial crater itself, which would fall somewhere between the two innermost rings. The initial transient crater formed by the impact would have been obliterated by subsequent deformation, which would have included extensive rebounding of material inside the crater.
LOL they have to block out Window 4 because of stray light from A VERY ANNOYING PLANET!! 😅🤣😂

When the Earth, the whole Earth, is too bright and interrupting your work. #astronautproblems #ArtemisII
Some lunar vocabulary in case you're following along with the #Artemis II flyby:
* albedo: reflectiveness (high albedo=very shiny)
* mare/maria(plural): from Latin for "sea," dark regions on the Moon, which are dried lava basins
* terminator: the line of the transition between sunlight & darkness

🌊 When you dive on the HOV Alvin, each Observer has a tablet + we were tasked w/ meticulous record-keeping. The anticipation was v. stressful.
Now, imagine floating in that small "office" while looping around the moon + ensuring you record... EVERYTHING 😮💨

A block of text that says "Scientists at the University of Miami are carrying out a research study on trends in the field of science communication. For this survey we are defining science communication as work that is done: • by a technical subject area expert in some field related to science, technology, engineering, or mathematics, • outside of classroom settings • aimed at the public If you are 18 years of age or older and work or recently worked in this field (full-time, part-time, or as a side project), please click the link below to complete a short survey. If you are interested in learning more about this research study, please e-mail us at Julia.wester@miami.edu. In the body of your email please provide your full name, and if you would prefer to be contacted by phone, your phone number and the best time to reach you. Contacting us for more information does not commit you to participating, and should you decide to participate you may terminate your participation at any time."
Attention Science Communicators!
We are conducting a survey on the landscape of science communication & need your help gathering experiences.
Please send this to #SciComm ppl you know. We want to get as thorough a sense of the state of the field as we can.

And JWST is actually a bad example because it is the expensivest space mission ever. Do this comparison for a smaller mission producing mapping or survey data that’ll be useful for unforeseen studies for decades and decades — Magellan, LRO, Mars Global Surveyor, WISE, SPHEREx…
🚀 10 years ago, our largest and most sophisticated martian explorer left Earth behind.
To mark the launch anniversary, here are 5 remarkable things @esa.int's Trace Gas Orbiter (TGO) was made for 🧵👇
Is fun when they kinda give up and just play the commentary from some other network (like ‘this sport ain’t getting many views, let’s just air the BBC feed’). Would love some DVD style commentary too (“aw, why did you let me explain the luge relay rules for the tenth time? Some co-analyst you are”)
Wow… great game (bonus hockey and all). Hope the new neighbors don’t mind the yelling.
Can't believe Team USA gave up a shortie to Canada - but more can't believe I have to go to class and miss Period 3. Chant some extra USA's for me?
(Reminds me of 2010, when I missed the men's gold medal game flying to LPSC. Hopefully different outcome today!)
My evening will be all the video pods on YT recapping the days' games, I think. All the highlights, none of the stick-gripping tie game anxiety....
AAAAHHHHH! Two OT games in one day! So much stress (and too damn many meetings I MISSED THE GOAL :().
So much good hockey, so little time. And we have the women's medal games tomorrow (crossing fingers they finish before my afternoon classes, b/c I can't seem to avoid spoilers when I miss games).
I was just about to posit if this was going to go to a shootout... but Marner! Just like 4 Nations (minus the good drop pass from Sid). Still on track for a US/Canada gold medal game (hopefully with 87)!
Ah! Tied with 3 minutes left! Czechia is Canada's kryptonite (*in hockey, anyway)
The hardest part can be getting the w/c to the field (accessible vans not always easy to rent, getting in/out of an SUV not always an option). Different issues depending on chair (heavy motorized vs. lighter manual). Hard to fit all into skeets. TL;DR: w/c users do field work! Just takes planning.
We take w/c users in the field - they don't have to just be remote! Definitely worth a chat with @bakingsodavolc.bsky.social (GeoSPACE PI) about accessible field work. Lots of available adaptive equip. but will depends on the site and the user: third wheels or mats for rough ground, for example.
Looking forward to #WinterOlympics in a time zone that doesn't require taking a day off for live events. Just can't seem to stay off social medias so I miss spoilers (not a comment on the thread: USA/Canada is a must-watch and these are just prelims. Will have to be No Internet for medal games.)
A graphic featuring stylized stick figures walking on a red line. Most use mobility aids including crutches, a wheelchair, a walking stick, and a guide dog. One is examining a rock through a magnifying glass. There's an IAGD hand lens logo and a QR code. The text reads: Spring 2026 Student Pathways Scholarship Supporting undergraduate and graduate students with disabilities in the geosciences Two scholarships of $750 each will be awarded Deadline: March 1 Questions? Student contacts Katelyn Frizzell, Arizona State University krfrizze@asu.edu Alex Bearden, University of California Berkeley alex_bearden@berkeley.edu
The IAGD is now accepting applications for our Student Pathways Scholarship for the Spring 2026 cycle with a deadline of March 1.
The one-time awards of $750 are meant to support students with disabilities studying any geoscience discipline.
