More than 600 migrants cross English Channel in single day On Saturday, 602 people arrived on nine boats, marking the second busiest day so far this year.

Yesterday, the BBC covered 600 people crossing the channel in small boats on Saturday, noting it was the 2nd highest in a day so far this year. What they'd didn't add was that even including the 600 people, crossings are down 35% compared with the same time last year.

Just submitted a new story for a thing, already hit my batting average of writing one short, and it's only April! Pretty proud of this one as well, proper pseudo-PI/noir plot and everything.

A black and white picture of Beaver Sherlock and Beaver Watson investigating, from the film Hundreds of Beavers.

A black and white picture of Beaver Sherlock and Beaver Watson investigating, from the film Hundreds of Beavers.

I watched Hundreds of Beavers last night which had all the Wile E. Coyote bits of my brain giggling throughout. Bonus giggles for the Danny Go-esque log flume chase, the beaver Bond villain lair, and random FOR SALE sign left into the final chase. Glorious nonsense.

this is cool because it's a very obvious concept but it's neat to see it laid out in data!

Shout out to the guy spending Friday night outside Liverpool Street with a megaphone saying, ‘Smart people don’t have kids. Smart people have a life,’ over and over again. Love his style, love the monotone pitch, super love the total lack of irony in the delivery.

Had some statements for books of mine that have earned out (the dream!) so I think it's worth reminding people: if you love an author, seek out her backlist. Ask bookshops to order them if you can. Bookshops these days often won't have older titles, because of space limitations & returns policies🧵

For my tuppence, I think the indie thing is specific to each community. LitRPG doesn't necessarily behave like epic fantasy, supernatural romance, etc. Some do transfer to trad successfully - LitRPG will get a second test with Shirtaloon soon though.

My other favourite thing is where a new trend breaks out and suddenly all the received wisdom changes. No-one will touch a sub-genre until there's a new breakout hit, then suddenly everyone is all over it. Only ever happens organically, but this is the thing Publishing would love to synthesise.

TCM is another misnomer of course - the T is a heady euphemism that ignores many, many sales channels. Indie/Self-pub sales via Amazon for instance.

Ahh fair enough - I shall keep an eye on it then. Nice bar that though, for the record.

I normally describe Publishing to outsiders as a bunch of augurs and astrologers wandering around telling each other what good scientists they are. On a good day, we discover we disemboweled the correct chicken 2 years previously.

I don't like it, Johnny. I preferred living in the stable, boring bit of history.

Growing up, I remember my dad telling me how, during certain periods of the Cold War, he fully expected the world to end. Nuclear conflict, WW3 etc. It was always history though. Waking up this morning, checking the news first thing, I begin to understand what it feels like.
