100 years ago today, on 16 April 1925, the German Atlantic Expedition began with RV Meteor, the first of many Meteors to follow.
From 1925 to 1927, fundamental data was collected and insights gained during this first systematic survey of the South Atlantic.

Photo showing a German train while at a station. A digital display on the front of the train reads "psst, train is asleep", which means the train is not in service.
While I do like this kind of DB humour I suggest to stay away from trains like this signaling "psst, train is asleep " 😉 Otherwise, you may end up somewhere in the dark ...
We collectively haven’t been taking the plans laid out by Project 2025 seriously enough. They want to destroy NOAA so people won’t know that climate change is happening. It sounds stupid and alarmist if you haven’t been paying attention.
Sound on 😽🤍
Yes, please do so. I am sure, you have some treasures to share ...
Welcome back, Femke 🙂 very nice photo...
Yup, the Labrador Sea conditions are somewhat special 😉
Photo showing a CTD device manufactured by Sea & Sun.
Since you asked, here is one for you ... 😉
Photo showeing a side-view of an oceanographic underwater sensor unit, the CTD-sonde, here a model manufactured by SBE. There six electronic plugs and the pressure sensor on this side of the housing.
Photo showing a front view of the sensor head of a particular CTD-unit manufactured by Sea&Sun.
Photo showing an oceanographic water sampler system with an attached CTD-unit during operation in the water close but under the sea surface.
Photo showing an oceanographic water sampler system with an attached CTD-unit, while the system is lifted up by a ship's crane. The photo was taken from below, it thus shows the bottom side of the entire assembly.
Do you remember the date today, Jan 22nd?
Happy #CTDAppreciationDay everyone ...
And many thanks to all the
CTDs, water samplers, #Argo floats and human teams out there at sea, you do fantastic work that is tremendously important.

Yes, these little discs are made of metal, not ceramic. Another piece of info came up: manufacturer may be the former Meereselektronik GmbH (🇩🇪), which is today Sea&Sun Technology. Will try to find out more ...
Photo of probably an old currentmeter, probably based on sound measurements. No clear background Infos available.
Ok, my quest for the unknown sampler bottle in the back of our storage room ended up in a dead end. Apologies for the cliffhanger.
But what about this beauty ? Probably an old sound-based currentmeter. No real background info. 1990s ? Probably not FSI, check the head. Any thoughts?

175 maps showing temperature change from 1850 to 2024
Mapping changes in temperature: 2024 edition
Correction: the 2nd left bottle is 10 l, not 20 l. Apologies for my mistake!
Unfortunately no trace metal bottles, but we still have another historic 'beauty" somewhere hidden in our storage rooms. Need to find it and check out the history. Stay tuned 😉
Definitely my favorite 😍
Hi David, could you add me to the list? Many thanks ...
The photo shows 3 modern Niskin water sampling bottles in sizes of 30 l, 10 l and 1,5 l as well as a reversing water sampler of type Nansen.
