Going to a Metro Ink. event was my first time attempting to interact with a community. Not just the Splatoon community, not even an offline community, but JUST a community. I was so out of my element at the time, but once I reached a certain point in my life, I’ve been trying to make new connections with as many people as possible. I’m naturally introverted, so this was a bit uphill for me, but it’s something I knew I wanted for myself. The NY Splatoon scene is so inviting and accepting that I felt like a part of it almost immediately. So much so that I was taken aback at first seeing people recognize me, a feeling I’m admittedly still trying to get used to. Despite how awkward I felt trying to enter that space, the people already there allowed, and even encouraged, me to be myself. Now, I find myself as a regular attending every Big (and even Little) Dapple and Gridlock. I’ve been given the privilege to commentate some games. I even get to do pretty mediocre in the tournaments themselves, which is pretty impressive for someone who doesn’t play the game (allegedly). I very rarely feel like I can find a space where I feel accepted for who I am, but at the risk of sounding like an AI chat bot, the reason I do here is because these events doesn’t just house a community, it houses people. Like, actual people that exist. To me, that’s what something like Big Dapple 10 represents; everyone’s individual stories coming together to lift us all up and have fun with people who just get us. Congratulations on making it this far Metro, and here’s to 10 more excuses for me to call Bluefin Zones trash! ❤️
