It is crazymaking to listen to the right claim Orban's loss means he was never an authoritarian when people in Hungary feared that opposing him would immiserate their families

ICE detaining doctors is absurd. Let me explain something: foreign-trained doctors get trained and practice in places where American medical graduates often do not want to go. They are not taking jobs from anybody. They go to undesirable locations and take undesirable jobs.

Donald Trump was posting on Truth Social until 4:10am, including an image of himself as Jesus and multiple posts of the same article, raising alarms about Biden’s cognitive decline.

I realize this is confusing, but the U.S.-Israeli war with Iran isn’t a domestic political story.

Great to see Mozilla returning to an expansive vision for the web; the idea that we should download unsafe native binaries for most tasks has always been naff:

Remember when Trump threatened to wipe out a whole civilization? And then backed out of that and talked about forming a deal with Iran? And then dropped that and went to a UFC fight as negotiations fell apart? And then unveiled a triumphal arch and a photo of himself as Jesus?

That was this week.

He never addresses the person who's been saying consistently that Trump is a deranged fascist who will bring down this whole country & quite possibly the world if given power.

The person who's been saying "orange man bad" while he & his buddies analyze & too-clever themselves up their own asses.

It's so revealing: to the extent Klein ever addresses criticis, they come from the right. He addresses hardcore Trump fans. All these media guys live on X, surrounded by Trump fans!

The critic Klein never addresses is the person who's been screaming all this at the top of their lungs since 2015.

Solar permitting scorecard A majority of states have done little to adopt common-sense practices that reduce the costs and delays that permitting and inspection requirements impose on families wishing to install solar panels an...

How are states doing on removing bureaucratic obstacles to rooftop solar power? Environment America has a new scorecard & y'all ... it's pretty dismal. No state gets an A. Only two states -- CA & TX -- get a B.

State lawmakers really need to get on this.

I don't *love* that Trump has made America look foolish and weak on the world stage, or that he's kneecapping US electrification and renewables, but sending a signal this unambiguous to the rest of the world that fossil fuels are a liability...well, it's a silver lining of sorts.

Great to see Chromium implement this. There aren't many places where we've lagged on features, and a few relate to text and layouts that we didn't think could be fast enough until LayoutNG landed. Happy to see an impl that doesn't nerf performance.

And again, my quibbles aren't important.

Sharing your journey took guts because, as you know, the React community closes ranks hard whenever it feels threatened, going to pretty extreme lengths (calling people's bosses, etc.) to override reasonable engineering choices.

There's also a wee bit of stair-stepping in the first-party font loading that you can maybe remove w/ some targeted `<link rel="preload" as="font" fetch priority="high" ...>` magic.

As for the componentry, I'm impressed w/ how well the granular serving is working for you. Well done.

The big opportunity here seems to be around the `airgap.js` consent thing and the way it interacts w/ your first-party code on a limited bandwidth connection. Perhaps worth considering hosting it directly? Payload is also too large, but a conversation for you and the vendor.

Congrats on the big launch! Excited y'all are getting closer to the platform. Great work.

Looking at traces, it's impressive how good your connection reuse is. I'd have thought you'd win more from bundling (e.g., CSS and early JS), but more concerned w/ third parties. Which is great!

It's not just that Orbán losing inspires hope in other competitive-autocratic countries ruled by right-wing nationalist authoritarians. It's that his loss materially changes things in those other countries, because he's been operating as a headquarters and funding source...
