One part of the ring I photographed. You need to take multiple sharp photographs to be able to read the full number and identify the ringing station, or you can't submit the number.

Saw a white stork (ooievaar) today and noticed it was ringed - so I took the effort of photographing it. And boy am I glad I did! This stork has ring 4049 and was originally ringed in... june 1999! Not a record by far for a white stork, but extremely cool to discover a bird that old! #birds

Eleven cormorants (aalscholver) fly from left to right in a single line. Towards the end of the line, with three cormorants behind it, flies a single barnacle goose (brandgans), which stands out because it has a light grey underside and a white face, while the cormorants are mostly black. The birds are similar sizes.

A man holding a baby chimp pulls away a cloth that had covered a painting of two cheetahs, to signify the opening of the exhibition. Both the man and the small chimp seem slightly shocked by the image and as if they're recoiling. Behind the man stand a woman with big hair and a man with a very 70's moustache. Photo taken on 09-06-1977 at Burgers Zoo, Arnhem.

Today I was looking at chimpanzee photographs in our archive collection (long story) and came across this incredible photograph of baby chimp "Sjoco" opening an art exhibition at Burgers Zoo back in 1977.

At the same time, Frans de Waal was doing his famous chimp research at this same zoo.

Prachtig artikel.

A somewhat rotund looking house martin in flight, seen from below. It has a very white fluffy looking belly and chin. Its upper body is blueish black, but only its cap can be seen here. It has a tiny beak. The bird is catching the sunlight, neatly outlining each individual feather on both of its wings, which re spread wide.

After the barn swallow (boerenzwaluw) and sand martin (oeverzwaluw) now the house martin (huiszwaluw) has also returned! A sizeable group was foraging above the lake. This is probably the roundest one I've ever seen. #birds

The placing of the foundational stone of the Airborne Monument in Oosterbeek, 25 september 1945. A large stone is being placed. Major-general Urquhart stands beside it holding a floral arrangement in the shape of the airborne emblem. A large crowd is gathered around, and in the background groups of people can be seen watching from the roof and chimneys of a half destroyed house. Photo from Gelders Archief: 1534 - 743, W.S. Across the street from it stands the Airborne Monument, funded by the people of Oosterbeek directly after the war. The first stone was placed by major-general Urquhart in september 1945, with crowds watching even from the roofs of war damaged half-ruined houses. A very different world.

A common tern - a highly aerodynamic bird that's mostly white with a black cap and a mostly red bill - flies above the water, its bill opened slightly in preparation for catching an insect.

Always great to have the common terns (visdief) back! Here you can see one of their hunting methods: gliding above the water surface and picking off insects. #birds

A nice sight of spring this morning along the Grote Grindgat shoreline: barn swallows (boerenzwaluw) were gathering sand with their tiny beaks, dipping it in the lake's water to make it usable for nest building, and flying off with the resulting mouthful of mud. #birds

A wood warbler on a tree branch. It is a very typical phyllo, with a particularly bright yellow breast and face colouring and a greenish brown back. The background is an open sky, which somewhat mutes the bird's colours.

The same wood warbler, looking down on me. It is sitting in front of the closed canopy, which makes its yellow colours more apparent.

Went out to the local park to find a wood warbler (fluiter). Took some work as it was initially mostly silent and hidden in the canopy, but eventually it became more cooperative. Wood warblers are early this year - I normally see them in May. #birds

A large gull flies above a ridge of sand at a sand extraction site. In the distance a row of trees can be seen. The gull is a second calendar year Caspian gull, which is much whiter in general appearance than the yellow-legged and herring gulls of its age.

An immature (2cy) Caspian gull (Pontische meeuw) not far from my house. This is one of three very similar gull species which all occur here: yellow-legged (geelpootmeeuw), herring (zilvermeeuw) and Caspian and which are hard to tell apart, but regular practice makes doing so much easier! #birds

A small brownish and white owl, quite round in shape, sits in a blossoming tree. The white flowers reflect the plentiful sunlight and stand in stark contrast to the dark little owl, which is mostly in the shade. It is looking to the side, where mere metres away cyclists were passing by.
