While Trump and his team are ranting and raving, and his followers are twisting the Bible to defend him, the Pope is just showing love. competing expressions of Christian faith, no theological debate needed on which is better- by their fruits you will know them.

people need to be prepared for the fact that Hegseth 100% knew the "Bible" passage was from Pulp Fiction, but thought it was cool and macho. There is that trend in evangelicalism, where macho-ness matters more than Biblical accuracy.
Roman Catholic church: here's 1000+ years of just war thinking that applies Jesus' teachings to the complexity of the world.
JD Vance: whatever brah, what about WWII?

part of what I discussed here. Rubio had no idea what he was doing with his cuts

Erick Erickson later today: "Look, I don't like it that Trump is pretending to be Jesus on the day half of Christianity celebrates Easter. But, I mean, it's better than having gender inclusive bathrooms."
[a joke, based on his response to the last insulting post]
Wait, so JD Vance seriously just tried negotiating for a couple of hours to end decades'-old tensions, and then was just like "F#$% it?"
Does anyone have recommendations for a film or clips that highlight what Muslims went through in the US post-9/11? I used to use a clip of AmericaEast, but that's become impossible to get ahold of

this reminds me of a conversation I had with a Trump-leaning family member in the 1st term. They credited him with preventing us from going to war w/ DPRK. I pointed out that he was the one that nearly got us into war. They just said, "oh, right"
Also, I'm old enough to remember religious freedom advocates howling in outrage when Obama asked nuns to sign a form mentioning birth control. Interested to see their reaction to Trump directly threatening the Vatican.
I wrote something about the absence of religious freedom as a priority in Trump's National Security Strategy. I see why they'd downplay that.

Right now I'm watching DTF St. Louis, The Rooster, and the Scrubs reunion. I need a show that's not about middle-aged angst.
re-upping my recent @duckofminerva.bsky.social post as Hegseth's latest claims of divine favor for the US war on Iran. As a fellow Christian, I hope Hegseth starts actually reading the Bible for the warnings it contains about claiming to speak for God

But because of these uncertainties, he says more moral responsibility often rests with commanders.
Re-reading Walzer's Just and Unjust Wars. He notes that soldiers may attempt to excuse war crimes through claims of ignorance and duress, and the desire to maintain soldierly bonds makes refusal of unjust orders difficult. The first two don't apply here, and he's skeptical of the third.
it said it could provide direct links, so I asked for it, and then it said it can't because I'm not on the pro version
I was looking for people who argued we should include right-wing extremists in the political process, similar to arguments about moderating Islamists. Couldn't find any. Asked ChatGPT. It said there are many such sources. Asked for a list. It gave me 10. NONE exist

my new post in @duckofminerva.bsky.social, in which I discuss the string of disturbing religious actions by the Trump Admin as the end result of Christian nationalism, and compare it to more productive uses of faith in politics
I stopped engaging with Facebook replies, because I suspect half are bots. But when I've tried to engage with right-leaning friends and family, they just try to change the subject. So I don't know.
me: I've got my concrete and reasonable to-do list, I had a good work out, I already started drafting my first piece of writing in my head. It's going to be a productive Monday.

I feel more busy as a Full than I did as Associate. When do I get to be one of these deadwood Profs I keep hearing about?

I engaged with pro-Trump evangelicals in his first time (I'm a liberal Episcopalian). There were Biblical attempts to justify ("King David acted sinfully") but they were a stretch.
I searched for "vandalism abortion clinic" to find examples for class (I teach such fun subjects) and these were the top Google results. That's weird, right?
that 20+% gap between whether they think he acts ethically and whether they support him is a big takeaway.
Thoughts from kids:
10 year olds: Dad do you think [dog] knows she's a dog?
7 year old: What if we're all AI, and the things that we think are AI are actually people?
as I mentioned before I've redone my Terrorism&CT course to look more at right-wing terrorism. I'm currently making the new lectures on contemporary issues. Not that anything in this course is "fun" but this is especially dark stuff to work on right now
very sad to see the Washington Post cuts. When I moved to DC after college in 2005 I excitedly got a print subscription, I'd read it on the bus to work. It made me feel like this strange new city was home. It deserved better, esp. from someone w/ more money than he could ever spend.
I keep forgetting it even exists. Glad I didn't need it for promotion.
