I’m ashamed to admit that I haven’t heard the Horace Silver version of Lonely Woman (I’ve only heard the Metheny cover). Btw, Billy Higgins sizzle cymbal on the Metheny version is the best cymbal sound on record, IMO.

They play Horace Silver’s achingly beautiful composition. But it’s kind of a weird choice, since Ornette recorded an iconic, completely different song also called Lonely Woman. And Charlie and Billy played on it. Charlie would continue to play it w/ Ornette, and Geri Allen, and Old and New Dreams…

Pat Metheny recorded a trio album with Charlie Haden and Billy Higgins, two musicians that recorded Ornette’s Shape of Jazz to Come. It is called Rejoicing, and it’s a great album. But there is one thing that’s confounded me. The song “Lonely Woman.”
