Differences in 10–20 Hz ‘shock’ attenuation emerge between injured and uninjured runners across a 30-minute run Running is associated with high rates of injury. One mechanism that has been proposed to contribute to running injury is greater exposure to 10–20 Hz …

When running, every step creates a 'shockwave' that travels up our body. Researchers have hypothesized that these 'shocks,' and how our body deals with them, may cause injury. We show that injured runners deal with these 'shocks' differently than uninjured runners, particularly as they get tired.

Anyone know if NIH LRP payments are still disbursed during shutdown?

Please repost! We have a second biomechanics faculty position!

This is an open rank clinical-track position in sports biomechanics at the University of Michigan. This is a largely teaching-focused position and we have outstanding resources to support teaching and student learning. #BiomechSky

I have agreed to chair Models and Motor Control at ISB (tuesday morning). I'm looking for a co-chair who is student/postdoc in this area. If you have a mentee or person to suggest please let me know!

I would rather listen to something too loud or too quiet than listen on a volume setting that isn't a multiple of 5.

12 is also acceptable.

If the objective is to maximize ecological validity and study the speeds people actually use, you could also ask for self selected "typical" and self selected "fastest"

Since RFK Jr is taking over the NIH, I've decided to pivot my grant direction. It will now be about the biomechanics of bear wrestling as a form of subsistence farming. Interested collaborators and participants HMU.

Using Wearable Technology to Predict Injury in Runners Dovin Kiernan, a recent graduate from the Biomedical Engineering Graduate Group at the University of California, Davis, explores biomechanics and wearable technology to reduce the high rates of overus...

Thanks Katherine Panaligan for the opportunity to chat about the work we've been doing at the UC Davis College of Engineering to improve real-world measurements of running and predictions of running injury.

I thought my "procrastinate to the last second before finishing dissertation" plan was foolproof but now that my kids have school holidays, and I'm sick, and they're sick I'm starting to reconsider. O well, now I know for the next one.

A person standing in a t-pose with their arms straight out to their sides. Blue squares indicate the position of IMUs on their legs and pelvis. Zoomed in we can see that beside each "correctly" placed IMU there can be an incorrectly placed IMU to the left (shown as red) or the right (shown as purple). Below, time series, frequency domain, and coherence plots show the measurements of the "correct" blue and "incorrect" purple and red IMUs.

IMUs allow running biomechanics to be studied in the "real world." In real world scenarios, however, an IMU may be misplaced or may move across a data collection. We quantified how a small difference in IMU placement can affect accelerations and angular velocities.

What does that look like when doing descriptive research?

One of the most satisfying days of building a house: that first coat of white primer on the drywall.

One of the least satisfying days of building a house: that first coat of white paint on a white-primed ceiling.

I think that's probably it! The paper quantifies what happens to IMU measurements (a, w) if we misplace the IMU or if it moves across the duration of a data collection so it's very descriptive and not really hypothesis-driven.

Reviewer 1: "In this paper, the authors describe an experiment and the data obtained, along with some analysis. I see no scientific contribution in this paper, as it is just an analysis of experimental data."

Option A: Spend 2 minutes cleaning up my 3 year old's mess.

Option B: Spend 1 hour of full-blown, all-out tantrum getting the 3 year old to clean up their own mess.

I'm a good decision maker... 😵‍💫☠️

Anyone finished a hot mop before? I'd never heard of it before moving to California. Do I have to float it first or can I do thin set-decoupling membrane-thin set-tile? 🔨🏠
