Matt Walsh tweeted last year: "We've spent the last 25 years bringing "freedom" and "democracy" to countries around the globe while our own country has been systematically invaded and now our largest cities are run by foreigners and communists. If you want to know why I'm so avowedly non-interventionist, this is why."

Then he tweeted today: ""This is a war for oil!!!!!"

First of all, the "war" lasted like 90 minutes. Second, going to war to secure vital resources for your own people is totally legitimate. Why should we allow some third world communist shithole to control trillions of dollars worth of oil?"

Laura Loomer tweeted last year: "I’m America First, I don’t support “Regime Change”. I went on @Bannons_WarRoom to talk about Chinese aggression in Venezuela and why we need to designate the Muslim Brotherhood as a foreign Islamic terrorist organization."

Then she tweeted yesterday: "Maduro has arrived at the DEA office in Manhattan. He was transported in an armored motorcade after being transported in a blindfold via helicopter & then by plane to New York after his compound in Caracas was raided by US Special Forces.

Proud to be an American today!

USA 🇺🇸"

If you want to be its standard-bearer that is a non-negotiable position"

Then he tweeted yesterday: "I can think of few better uses of my tax dollars than black-bagging the head of a foreign narco-trafficking organization that enriches itself by addicting and poisoning my fellow Americans"

A tweet from BrooklynDad_Defiant! says: “No words. If you think a golden ballroom is more important than childhood cancer research... I have nothing left to say to you.” The image shows an illustration of a bald child in a hospital gown, holding an IV pole and looking into an opulent golden ballroom filled with formally dressed adults.

It’s more than just bad priorities. It’s about lack of basic decency.

Did people really memorize phone numbers before cell phones, or is that just a movie thing?
2? Questions
I was watching some old shows from the 90s and noticed people would just dial numbers from memory - like they'd call their friends or family without looking anything up.
Made me wonder if that was actually normal back then? Did people genuinely have all their important numbers memorized, or did most folks keep a little address book or written list nearby?

If anyone needs me I will be in the museum, lying down next to the bog bodies.

I still have six phone numbers memorized, unsurprisingly being those of immediate family and also my landline, which I still have. Everything else is handled by the contacts list.

Below, Aaron Rupar’s tweet quotes Pete Hegseth saying on Fox News: “I’m also proud that today we’re signing a letter of acceptance to build a Qatari Emeri air force facility at the Mountain Home Airbase in Idaho.”

Guess that Qatari jet wasn’t a “gift” to Trump after all.

Meanwhile the White House just illegally laid off dozens of CDC researchers and scientists during the shutdown.

we're not going to have a good, sustainable social media site as long as it is made or run by tech people. that is why I am building my own out of water, small rocks, moss, snails, brightly colored shrimp, one of those sucking fish, a mermaid statue. I'll be honest, this may actually be an aquarium.

"At the Duck Pond" by Henry John Yeend King (1855-1924) has been overlaid with yellow humorous text:
induction: the act of inserting ducks
deduction: the act of removing ducks
reduction: replacing a worn out duck with another duck

The etymology checks out.

the law is real until it gets to SCOTUS at which point it becomes fake, which doesn't bother the six reactionaries at the top but does undermine literally everyone else in the profession

Troops to Portland? Illegal and absurd. But the absurdity is the point. Trump policy is to ignore real threats to US security coming from abroad and use the armed forces to pursue imaginary threats from within, thereby creating an atmosphere suitable for personal rule. (1/2)

The buff-tip moth (Phalera bucephala) has mastered a very particular kind of camouflage.

When they close their wings up, they resemble a broken twig.

Native to large parts of Europe, there's regional pattern variation that reflects the local tree species. This one best resembles birch twigs?

Smiling as she rings the radiation bell at the treatment center—celebrating an end-of-radiation milestone on Sept 10

On this Sept 11, we remember. My wife served at Ground Zero as a first responder. Yesterday she rang the radiation bell, a milestone on her road to beating breast cancer. Grief + gratitude, service + strength. Proud of her. #NeverForget #FirstResponder #BreastCancer

4-panel Comic. (1) STUDENT: If the wavefunction only collapses when I observe it, does that mean my consciousness affects the universe? (2) [Bad:] PROFESSOR: Yes, quantum entanglement proves that we all have souls. (3) [Good:] PROFESSOR: No, consciousness plays no role here. It’s just physical measurement. (4) [Chaotic:] PROFESSOR: No. The wavefunction collapses when *I* look at it because I’m a full professor. It won’t collapse for an undergraduate.

Tomatoes, still ripening on the vine.

Tomatoes, still ripening on the vine.

Krissy canned 18 quarts of tomatoes today and we still have a ridiculous amount still on the vine. On the other hand, I did take a ripe tomato right off the vine today, slice it up, season it with salt and pepper and then eat the whole damn thing, so this should not be construed as a complaint

You can add up all the enjoyable pursuits of LLMs and the work productivity hacks and none of them, separately or together, will be more important than AI’s ecological costs or political disruption.

“We” is more important here.
